Accepted a job in BR starting after the current school year and would be grateful for any first hand views of high schools in the area in regards to special education and available resources. My son is on the Autism spectrum and will be moving with me for his last two years of high school. Most likely looking at either Livingston Parish or Ascension Parish. Please feel free to contact me at mf_atkins@icloud.com

I've heard good things about LP special needs but nothing specific.

Simply going by those EXCELLENT grammar skills of yours, I'm going to make the assumption you are a product of the "public School" system.

He's in the general ed classes with accommodations, going to resource rooms when necessary. Currently has an aide in some classes.

Consider Zachary or Central, they're independent school districts and rank 1 and 2 in the state

So he has a para only in some classes? Hm. I'm assuming Math & ELA.

I'm not familiar with SPED in those parishes, but my advice (as a former SPED teacher) is to go to his IEP meetings with questions and conern (which you probable already do), and take an active role in his education (calling teachers when you have questions, form a relationship with his SPED teacher(s).

Thanks, I've been doing the IEP circuit since Kindergarten. ;) Already have been in touch with contacts at both Parish School Districts, just trying to possibly get some opinions from those who've had first hand experiences either on the parent or teaching side.

The LP school board absolutely hates my family. My younger brother is super autistic and dealing with the LP school board was like pulling teeth. I'm sure it's better now since my mother fought for years to get them to get their shite together. God bless man, it's not easy. Autism sucks.

Ascension has many great programs for those with autism. Not sure how things are since the flood as resources have been stretched thin, but I would assume they still offer the same type of care and teaching.

As others have said what accommodations did your son have and what are you expecting?

Listen here you MF'er, you did not say public or private. Generally speaking, either Livingston parish or Ascension Parish schools are better than East Baton Rouge schools, including special education by a mile. This of course is public schools. Privately, Baton Rouge has Brighton Academy which is good for SPED.. Look for A or B rated schools in Ascension and Livingston. If those public schools are rated A or B, preferably A , their specialized education would likely be better. There is a link somewhere that shows the most recent school grades. Perhaps someone else can provide this, as I am voice texting stuck in traffic.

Of course to get him public special education services he would have to have an IEP. If he does not already have one, pupil appraisal services is the place to start for whichever parish .

Also, there is a student on the autism spectrum at Prairieville middle school. This boy has a paraprofessional and hey all treat him quite well. He is in the school band and participates in all kind of extracurricular activities. He looks quite happy .
