About to lose my dog.

About to lose my dog Buck after 11 years. I got him for free at a truck stop in Brooksville, AL (Chow - Lab mix). He's been with me through everything; from my Freshman year of college flunk outs to other hard times in life, all the way up to marriage. He has been with me for my entire adult life to this point and has loved me more unconditionally than anyone else. This is awful and makes me never even want to have a dog again.
I've seen posts like this on the OT before and it made my heart hurt for all the others who have lost theirs. All this to say, enjoy yours if you have one as long as you have them and don't take them for granted. We get so used to them running up wagging their tail every time you come home, even the small stuff like begging for a piece of bacon, and then one day you are faced with the reality that it will never happen again. Hug those dogs while you can.

Sorry to hear this.
He sounds like a really good dog and a great friend.

Real sorry man. I've lost two in the last five years and it is rotten every time. The only consolation is that they're probably really hurting inside, they don't understand why, and the pain is about to go away. I really hate to see a dog suffer.

Sorry for your upcoming loss. It is very difficult. We went through it right before Christmas, and it made the holidays very somber in our home.

I wish we were back a few decades when men knew how to cope with hardships themselves. Freakin snowflakes on this board don't even know they are snowflakes. Sorry for your loss.

sorry for your loss man - it is not easy. my wife lost her cat that she had for 18 years - at the time literally 1/2 her life. it took a long while for her to not be sad. she still misses her, but the best thing I can pass as advice - the pain will diminish - the feelings of missing him won't go away, but revel in the fact you gave that boy the best life you possibly could and know he is always with you, maybe not physically, but spiritually and in your memories.
I wish you the best man. they may be pets, but for most they become something more - they become family.

I'm sorry buddy and I feel your pain. It's really hard to lose them when they have been your faithful companion for so long.
Take a week or two to mourn your buddy and then take your arse down to the shelter and get another. There is a dog there sleeping on the cold floor that wants nothing more than to be your best buddy for the rest of it's life. Nothing will make you feel better faster than giving a good life to one of the many that need it. Each day you waste feeling bad is a day less joy you get with the next one.

Can't agree more. My wife lost her dog that was with her since Katrina and after a few weeks of mourning I pitched the idea of getting a puppy. She still misses the childhood dog, but the love you get from a dog that you raise is indescribably joyful. Remember that our pets are here for a portion of our lives, but to them you're there for them for their whole life.

You are absolutely right, it is much better to bury all of these emotions deep down until they bubble to the surface and you resort to responding on a message board to a post about a dying dog. I have lost close family members, including my brother. This is nothing like that, I will mourn and move on with my life. However, I do feel sorry for you, to be human is to realize emotions, have compassion and empathy, and just a general love for all life.

I hate to admit it, but we ARE becoming soft as a society. When I was kid growing up in the country dogs came and went. I bet we had at least 10 in a 10 year period and that's not counting hunting dogs.
And those dogs NEVER came in the house. Today I'm as soft as the next guy with 2 dogs sleeping in the bed at night and lounging on the couch. And I will cry the day they leave this earth.
To the OP, sorry for the loss of your buddy

I am sorry about your dog, saying goodbye to an old friend is hard. He is now headed to the happy hunting grounds and will be waiting for you to join him someday.

Sorry to hear. It's always tough to lose a loved pet. At least all dogs go to heaven.

Sorry man, truly heartbreaking to lose a dog. Give it some time before you decide on another dog. As much as it hurts to lose them, think of all the good years and memories you had.

“Dogs, lives are short, too short, but you know that going in. You know the pain is coming, you're going to lose a dog, and there's going to be great anguish, so you live fully in the moment with her, never fail to share her joy or delight in her innocence, because you can't support the illusion that a dog can be your lifelong companion. There's such beauty in the hard honesty of that, in accepting and giving love while always aware that it comes with an unbearable price. Maybe loving dogs is a way we do penance for all the other illusions we allow ourselves and the mistakes we make because of those illusions.”

Sorry about your upcoming loss. Losing a pet can be like losing a family member. It won't be easy but remember all of the good times you guys had together.
