In Biloxi

quote:

“There were complaints about it,” said school board vice president Kenny Holloway. “There is some language in the book that makes people uncomfortable, and we can teach the same lesson with other books.” Holloway said the book will remain in school libraries, but will no longer be taught to eighth-grade students in the district.

quote:

Lee's 1960 novel about a black man falsely accused of raping a white woman, which won the Pulitzer Prize, has been a staple in classrooms for decades.

I remember in High School history class we watched Roots. These people are complaining about "To Kill A Mockingbird"?

Most in Mississippi didn't like the outcome of the book anyway. This is probably welcomed in that state.

So what will replace it? That’s such an important book for kids to read at that age. It’s also one of the few books you will ever have to read for school that’s really good

oh come on. The part of the book that made me laugh out loud the hardest was when they tried to build a snowman, but there wasn't enough snow on the ground to do it. So they made a snowman out of dirt. When they stepped back to look at it Scout said something along the lines of "Jim, I ain't never seen a n****r snowman."

If someone really gets offended by that, or thinks that the book endorses it, they ought to remove themselves from the gene pool.

Before anyone starts talking about modern PC this and that, To Kill A Mockingbird has been a hotly contested book in the classroom since it's publication in the 60s.

ETA - Doesn't mean it's the right action, but this isn't some new view on the book. Some people have had issues with it since the 1960s.

A seminal book in the entire history of black civil rights and it is pulled because it makes people uncomfortable...

I wonder which parts...

Dude, kids these days get offended at Halloween costumes. Why do you think they're called trigger warnings? It's because they don't look or even care about the context. N-word? Boom, triggered. Look for Mark Twain statues to be protested next.

If they have any sense of irony at all they will replace it in the curriculum with Fahrenheit 451.

I have the audio book from I Tunes on my phone. Think I'll listen to it tomorrow while I'm on a nice drive.

Thanks for reminding me.
