Dude flips his convertible while driving on I-20 on SC. A bunch of people stop to help flip the car upright. The driver is perfectly fine with the exception of a few scraps.

God was definitely watching out for this guy

Maybe the medical people on here can chime in, but all I could think about when they were flipping that car was that it was a good thing that guy didn't have a neck or spinal injury.

my first thought as well

the way his car dangled up and down could have further severed a spine or something. glad it didn't

i flipped (actually just rolled over) a toyota forerunner and it only took 5 people to flip it back over. I was actually surprised.

Flipping from the side of a 4runner is believable, but flipping it over completely with only 5 people seems a bit much.

Great idea to start shaking someone with a possible spinal injury

Maybe but maybe not. There are indications from some recent studies that the current focus on spinal immobilization may be wasted effort. They can't find any data that shows someone getting worse after the initial injury. The thought is that either the spinal cord is damaged or it isn't and that is that. There is the belief that there could be a fracture that hasn't insulted the cord yet and movement does that but there just aren't any real world examples.

It's something being examined by researchers in the EMS community. I wouldn't deviate from current practices now but that could all change in the future. That being said, I have personally pulled people from overturned and burning vehicles on more than one instance where I felt the danger of the situation outweighed worrying about a potential injury. So it all depends.

What is the medically preferred emergency method to get the guy out? Wait for a backhoe and dig a tunnel

Just shows what people can accomplish when we forget everything and just come together.

How are you gonna get real world examples when the patient shows up to the hospital already shaken by 4 dudes? I wouldn't want broken shards of bone bouncing around next to my spinal cord

you're right. we're all links needing to make a chain. we need to unite and connect with common causes and pull everyone together. They say a chain is as strong as its weakest link but i'd say a chain is stronger than its strongest link.

I'd rather have a messed up neck than burn to death or be crushed in a car.
