A heartbreaking photo of an elderly man pushing a popsicle cart triggered a flurry of goodwill after the image was posted to Facebook.
While driving in the Little Village area of Chicago, Joel Cervantes Macias noticed a man struggling to push his cart full of paleta, a type of popsicle. After snapping a photo of the man, Macias says he bought 20 popsicles for $50. He later posted the photo to Facebook and received such a positive response, he knew he had to do something more.

Some contributors expressed concern that the money wouldn't end up in Sanchez's hands, so Macias posted a few messages reassuring his followers that the man was in fact real and that the money would go to help his family. On Monday, Macias shared a Facebook Live, alongside numerous media outlets, showing Sanchez standing with his popsicles cart. During the video, Gustavo Gutierrez, co-owner of Paletas Poncho, tells Macias that Sanchez has been selling their posicles for more than 20 years.

On Sunday, Macias wrote on the GoFundMe page that they will leave donations open for a few more days and will disperse the funds later in the week.

uplifting story. Thanks for posting!
I would donate, but that old man now has more money than me by a fairly large margin

I bet he still works pushing the cart around after he gets the money. If quits now he will probably die in less than a year.

I saw a lady in similar shape struggling to get into a van yesterday. She's been begging for money all over for years now.

That's pretty cool, but at what point did Johnny Knoxville pull off his mask?

This is nice and all, but what happens next?
Honestly, that money will likely destroy what is left of this man's life.
It happens all the time with the lottery.
Scruffy will get negative responses for this, but that is an obscene amount of money to just throw at someone.

I was thinking something kind of similar. This guy probably couldn't care less about money at his old age. He probably pushes that cart around to stay alive. Unless he has kids/grandkids/great grandkids to share it with, I doubt this will impact his life that much.
It is definitely a nice gesture by the people that donated though, and I am in no way downplaying that.

These type of GoFundMe's are far more palatable than the Alton Sterling ones. Good for Joel doing solid work.

That's a great story, and glad for the donations, but how has he survived on the streets of Chicago without getting killed?

Maybe they can fix up with some wheels and a seat.

He is going to quit working and die now. That Popsicle cart was the only thing keeping him alive.
