I think that's just a ring of smoke from the rocket being launched from the tube. I'm not 100% sure but that sort of looks like and AT4 he's firing and I don't think it's projectile breaks the sound barrier.

ETA: I just checked (yes, when I Google something I let people know) and the AT4 has a muzzle velocity of 950 ft per second. To break the sound barrier a projectile needs to reach a velocity of 1,116 feet per second. So it's close to the speed of sound but not quite there.

Yeah, it's a shape charge projectile. This means it's destructive power comes from a directed explosion on the target the moment it hits. Thus, it does not have to go that fast to do it's damage. Kinetic energy rounds on the other hand (SABOT main gun tank rounds for example) do rely on the sheer power of their punch to deliver their destructive power.

Here's a video showing the differences in the two types of projectiles.

I even cited that I Googled the muzzle velocity of the AT4 and what is required to break the sound barrier. Yeah, I know a lot about military history and hardware but I don't know everything and have no problem saying when I have to go looks something up to verify. If I Google something, I let everyone know.

BTW, that's a South Korean K1 main battle tank. It's a locally Korean produced copy of the American M1. The front slope and gun mantlet are the giveaways.

And no, I did't have to Google that.

I am fairly certain it is a Carl Gustav.

Edit: Yup, it is.

I'm not 100% sure it is either. I based my guess on the cone on the rear of the launcher tube. Not sure which other shoulder fired AT rocket launcher it could be. Do you have any ideas? I know it's not an RPG. Past that, I'm not sure.

Yep, you're right. I did a Google search (there it is again) and the first thing that came up was the Wiki page that shows that exact picture. What was throwing me off was the fact it is American soldiers firing the weapon so I was thinking it had to be an American made rocket launcher. Good find, Wolfhound.

I don't know either. Been trying to find something that matches. It almost looks like a recoilless rifle because of the back cone. Looks like it swings open to reload.

here's a better look at it.

It's a bit different than most recoilless rifles in that it it's small enough to be shoulder fired. When I think recoilless rifle, something like this is what I usually picture.

Unis gave it away. They are SF. Only SOF and Ranger Regiment are using it.

Yeah I was unaware the US is now buying these for our troops. According to the Wiki page as of Feb 2014, it's now standard issue in our light infantry units.
