HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - A mother is upset after she said her 6-year-old son was suspended from Forestbrook Elementary for playing with blocks in the shape of a gun.

“We’re not talking about a threat being made," Brittney O'Brien said. "We’re not talking about my son saying he was going to bring in a gun. We’re not talking about him using those blocks and hitting the student. We’re talking about play and it’s just, this is hard for me because I just don’t understand.”

O’Brien said she got a call Tuesday morning from a school administrator saying she needed to come pick her son up from school for a one-day suspension for pointing blocks in the shape of a gun at another student.

quote:

“It was toy blocks. It makes no sense. I’m baffled,” O’Brien said.

O'Brien said she wasn’t told what exact policy her son violated. The referral did not indicate which code had been violated.

When she was appealing the suspension to the principal, she said she was told Declan had brought in a water gun at the beginning of the school year. She said she didn’t know about that happening and her family doesn't even own water guns.

The best part:

quote:

The disciplinary referral said the other student said she would have died if Declan was holding a real gun.

Wtf?

Boys will be boys.

I mean...

Children whose self-identify I must not assume will be be children whose self-identity I must not assume.

He should have said he made the blocks in the shape of a water gun and at worst, if it was real, the student he pointed it at would have gotten wet.

My opinion on this stuff is that she should express her opinion to the school, possibly in a boisterous manner, I don't care. And then give her kid a fun few days off, frick that school, this wouldn't be a punishment at my house.

"You made blocks into a gun? Cool let's go to the zoo on your vacation."

Ridiculous.

No tolerance of common sense strikes again.

I mean if I was 6 in the current school environment I would have been expelled long ago. We played army, cops/robbers, cowboys/Indians, king of the hill, dodgeball... The behavior of criminals apparently.

quote:

Declan said he was pulling blocks off of a structure of connected blocks shaped like a rectangle when he noticed the shape had changed.

“When I first broke it apart, it turned into a gun," he said.

That's when he said he pointed it at a rocking chair and a student walked in front of it. He said he didn't say anything while pointing the blocks.

O'Brien said the assistant teacher noticed and pulled her son aside.

She said when the teacher came back into the room, Declan was taken to administrators and given a referral with a one-day suspension.

. Tell the little girl to stay out of the line of fire. Valuable life lessons here.

I like how the boy's name is blocked out in the pictures, but then they give it in the story.

Interesting. Can a school disclose that info? I imagine the mom was the one who redacted the form.

I would have absolutely laid into that principal and teacher. That is goddamned ridiculous. What if he pointed his finger like a gun? Suspension? Is the teacher scared of shadows?

He could have seriously hurt someone. The emotional trauma of somebody pointing a LEGO pistol at you could last a lifetime.

I am currently drafting the BlockGate petition and hope we can diffuse the situation by banning all blocks in public schools. We will not discriminate against any type of blocks, whether they are wooden, plastic, lego, k'nex, tinker toys, erector set or that cheapass lego knockoff brand.

my kid got in trouble for something similar when he was in PreK...he was 4....had his hand pointed like a gun and was saying powpow on the playground...I got a call...and proceeded to let them know that if they have any real problems...like my kid getting hurt or something...they should call me at work...otherwise...don't waste my time with nonsense...he's a little boy playing...

our society sucks these days
