5th grade word problem is stumping people on the interwebs

One sibling has been left scratching their head at their younger brother’s Year 5 maths exam.
The question, shared to Reddit, asks students to figure out how many pages are in a book.

Some social media users were immediately stumped by the question.
One person commented: “And now we can all see why Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? worked as a game show.”
“Today I learned I would fail fifth grade math,” another said on the thread.
One passionate person said: “I always think to my self; ‘Ugh. People should really be tested with basic skills before they’re allowed to go out into society’. “And then I see this and realise I shouldn’t go out into society LOL!”
Some of these Twitter responses are solid gold.

I feel stupid after reading the answer.

Says a lot about society such an easy problem gives "functioning" adults trouble.

The first thing I did was trying to find a number divisible by 8 as it is going to have to be divisible by 8 then went from there.

A lot of people are asking “how many pages were read before Monday?”
That’s the sticking point. They refuse to assume that Monday is when Klein started the book.

This shouldn’t be hard
They had 1/4th remaining, meaning they read 3/4th, also known as 6/8th
If they read 1/8th on Tuesday, that means Monday’s 30 pages made up 5/8ths.
5/8= 0.625
30/.625= 48
48
A 5th grader should be able to show the work above

5th grader can. Apparently a lot of adults can't

Am adult should be able to do it without breaking it down like I did. But for a 5th grader, it would be expected they need to break it out first

to the comment on twitter that said "This is why the minimum wage should be lowered".

48 pages?
Did this in my head walking my dog
ETA. Already made a mistake. 200/5 is 40 not 50

I probably did it the hard way based off of what I’m seeing on Twitter.
I set it up as 30+1/8x+1/4x=x
Multiply both sides by 8 and keep working from there. I got to 48. Probably the long way but I don’t like fractions and prefer getting rid of them.

Are we really bragging about solving this problem? Damn, even tOT's standards are going down.

I never understand why people feel the need to create assumptions for word problems that aren’t clearly stated in the problem.
The point of the problem is to arrive at a solution using math. If you throw in an unstated assumption then the answer could be just about anything equal to or greater than 48.

Convert to a percentage.. that gives you the Monday percent when you have the other two days. Then set up a ratio and solve with basic algebra. Then add x to 30.
This stumps most of the responses?
