5G could throw weather forecasting into chaos

If you had a choice between a better, faster cell phone signal and an accurate weather forecast, which would you pick? That’s the question facing federal officials as they decide whether to auction off more of the wireless spectrum or heed meteorologists who say that such a move could throw US weather forecasting into chaos.

On Capitol Hill Thursday, NOAA’s acting chief, Neil Jacobs, said that interference from 5G wireless phones could reduce the accuracy of forecasts by 30 percent. That's equivalent, he said, to the quality of weather predictions four decades ago. “If you look back in time to see when our forecast scale was roughly 30 percent less than today, it was 1980,” Jacobs told the House Subcommittee on the Environment.

That reduction would give coastal residents two or three fewer days to prepare for a hurricane, and it could lead to incorrect predictions of the storms’ final path to land, Jacobs said. “This is really important,” he told ranking committee member Frank Lucas (R-Oklahoma).

Let me know when they invent these.

This seems sort of ridiculous.

BTW I was in downtown Houston for an astros game and noticed I had 5G on my phone and it was glorious. It was even working inside the stadium but I assume that was just because it was a light crowd that night.

this reads like when army generals leak some article about how any cut to their funding will lead to russia or china passing us up in military capability within the next 5 months

I'm sure the nerds on both sides will figure it out, that's why we have them

Sounds like some preemptive excuses from the likes of AT&T when their service starts to suck again.

No kidding. My wife and I have rearranged plans with our kids based on weather forecasts only to have it not be accurate. In fact, we rescheduled my son’s birthday party last year because there was heavy rain and thunderstorms predicted and it ended up being an absolutely gorgeous partly cloudy day.

At least with 5G, I’ll be able to quickly look up alternative ideas when we get hit with sudden bad weather.

I’d rather complete 4G speed coverage than faster speeds in a few places.

If he's telling the truth, it could be a big deal.

But what if he just doesn't want people to have MORE accurate forecasts in their pocket than the guys on the news?

Maybe 5G will give us some crazy cell phone radar capabilities

If you live in a hurricane zone, you should always have supplies and a hurricane prep plan ready.

As for not getting the path correct, how would that change from today?

As for weather, they already get it really fricking wrong. Give me better cell coverage all day everyday

Yeah, I agree. Get the current top speed to reach everywhere, then worry about getting the next highest speed available in limited places.
