I mean do they think they have permission to disregard lights and stop signs?

Glad the other person lived

Damn, I just watched them the other night on TWC. Used to watch their stream all the time on severe studios.

RIP.

Just watched the live stream on YouTube. Worst thing is you can tell they're about to run the stop sign and you can't do anything about it.

That will be the end of "storm chasing" for tv

Can't wait to see the lawsuits on this one.

Do these guys actually gather any data or just run around getting their adrenaline fix in and taking cool videos for YouTube?

Legitimate, trained storm chasers (which these guys were) serve an extremely important purpose. They help to verify ground truth as to whether a tornado is actually on the ground. Studies have shown that if the public hears confirmation of a tornado or sees live video of it, they are more likely to react and take precautionary measures.

In a lot of cases, storm chases are unsung heros.

No it won't be. This isn't the first case of storm chaser accidents or deaths. A few years ago, a Weather Channel vehicle was hit and thrown by a tornado. No one died, but on air personalities were in the vehicle, and it didn't stop chasing from happening after and it didn't stop chasing from being a part of tv coverage of severe weather. Storm chasers featured on a former Discovery Channel show were killed a few years ago, yet storm chasing rolls on.

As I said in my above post, legit storm chasing plays an important role in covering severe weather and providing warnings/information.

That all happened in the same chase when they were chasing the El Reno, OK tornado. That one was crazy.

Mike Bettes announces the deaths on The Weather Channel

ETA: and to those saying "play stupid games" here... these people do a legit service to the country by getting the word out about dangerous storms... and giving a picture to the danger

they're not drug dealers

They did not hit another car and kill people while doing it. Big difference.

We have the technology to not need this.

This will end with the WC being sued bigly

a radar image doesn't have the same impact video of the actual storm does

Was watching his stream, he came up on the stop sign and the stream ended, it appeared he didn't have intentions on stopping. Afterwards his spotter network beacon was the only one there so we kinda knew who it was. Bottom line is...follow the damn road signs, and more people need to think about the innocent 25 year old storm chaser who died due to it.

This kinda reminds me of Steve Erwin dying from a stingray. I wasn't surprised to hear he died, but it was different than what I expected.

also... the study of tornadoes is still ongoing... storm chasers will be around for a LONG time because there's still information they're trying to gain from these weather phenomenon to learn and hopefully continue to expand warning times to the average person

These guys were shooting video for a news channel to use to get viewers. Viewers equals commercials which equals profit.

This was not research. This was entertainment tv
