Is the job an office job at their corporate headquarters? Or is it a job on-site? If its an office headquarter job I HIGHLY doubt they will pay for the hair test. If you're going to be billable and they can pass it on to their client, then possibly so. If I were you I would just take the test, lots of companies put that in there as a scare tactic. If they do test you, and you fail, you wont go into a database of any kind, other than whoever you released the results to when you sign/ed. Its still a medical record that is subject to HIPPA. You may even be able to retroactively take away access to the actual record from that company, you'd have to research for that, though.
ETA: obviously the company will have it in their files that you failed their test, but they wont have access to the test again if they destroy those records after so long/lose them/etc.
Take the chance, if they hair test you, hope for the best, if they piss test you, great, you have a new job. Either way you do it, you arent in any different place than you are now unless you get the job, then you're in a better place. Good luck

If he takes a DOT test and they do hair he will end up in a database.
OP...it's in the O&G sector so it will be DOT. IF you fail you'll hAve to clear yourself with DISA via a clean test.

Its been 3 weeks. He is failing the test.
Depending on the industry, word gets around when you fail tests like this.
Going in there knowing you will fail the test is stupid no matter what anyone says

How often and how much do you smoke? If you smoke once every few weeks or so, it might not be a large enough amount to show up. All drug tests have cutoff levels. If you are doing it weekly then I think it would probably show up.
What you can do, is order an at-home hair test. You have a friend cut a hair sample, then mail it in and you'll get results mailed back to you telling if you passed or not. That way you can at least decide if you want to go through with the pre employment test or not.

Buy the shampoo from a head shop or GNC. The private school I went to used hair follicle testing on us 4 times a year, all of us used the shampoo and never had any problems.

I needed that. Engineering ones usually get sent to a legit lab. No chance shampoo will beat that.

Only a few, but the people I know failed. They get around it by soaking the hair in some solution and separating it from the shampoo that coats the hair.
Then they test the hair.

Real advice for OP:
Figure out what is more important in your life. Getting stoned or moving up in the world. You're not getting this job but there will be other opportunities. You were qualified enough for this one. You will never get a better opportunity if you can't beat the f'ing drug screen (this is usually just a formality they assume you will pass).
