noteworthy to me when the Benson controlled station brings raises the question. I'm hoping next year does brings make or breakness over more mediocrity...

TAMPA, FL (WVUE) -
One is an accident. Two is a trend. Three is a problem.

New Orleans, the Saints have a problem.

Mediocrity is his name.

Check that, mediocrity would be the best the Saints can hope for in 2016. They still have to win two more games to even achieve that.

Sunday's loss to the Bucs makes three-straight non-winning seasons. It's now been 1073 days since the Saints have held a winning record at any point during the regular season. It will be 1346 days before they'll have an opportunity to change that.

1346 days. That's the 2017 season opener for those wondering (assuming they start on a Sunday.)

The optimist will say the Saints are close. Don't buy it. Every team in the NFL is close. The Saints have been 'close' for three years now and still seem as far away as ever. Being close isn't cutting it.

The question is what should be done to fix it? And is it finally time to take a deep look at the two men calling all the shots and question if they are the right guys to make things right again?

I've said many times that Sean Payton must be judged on what he currently is not what he has been. Mickey Loomis is in the same boat.

The reality is under Payton and Loomis has slipped into a mediocre funk. And they've literally followed the exact same script each time. Super Bowl wins seven years ago don't guarantee a lifetime pass for mistakes.

In any other NFL organization, three straight sub par seasons would set the seats of the head coach and general manager are on fire. Even if they aren't removed, the pressure is undoubtedly felt.

That's where things seem to get lost with the Saints. There seems to be no pressure from the organization to improve. There's a sense that Loomis and Payton have free reign to do as they please without the fear of any consequences.

It's as if things haven't gotten bad enough to truly see this team has a problem. The question is when will enough be enough.

Neither of them is getting fired.

There's the answer to your question.

It is getting really hard to stomach watching empty WR sets on 3rd and 1 from an offensive genius. This formation/situation might have cost us 3 games this year already.

We see what we have right now with Payton and Brees. As much as I hate to say it, and never thought I would say it and mean it, it's time to trade Brees and fire Payton. Get a new coach with fresh ideas and a young QB to groom.

Sure it's a huge risk, but we know what we have right now and it's just mediocre. Actually this season it's down right bad.

I have cooled my opinion on making the Brees' extension a priority this offseason.

I think Mickey did the right thing last offseason and I would let him play it out at this point. Him and Sean need to show us they have meaningful game winning football left in them before we commit any further.

I think Brees can and still will play at a high level for a few more years but we can't risk being overconfident and wrong anymore. We can't ignore warning signs if they are there and we have a QB falling off that we plan to ink to a new deal just when the cap is getting right again.

I personally do not think Drew is at that point of abandoning yet but I am sure Arizona with Carson, Minny with Favre, and Denver with Manning all thought they had at least 1 more year too and their brass knows more about football than any of us.

For me 2017 is make or break. I will give Sean and Drew that. I think we should push all chips in and if we miss the playoffs next year then it will be painfully obvious what needs to happen.

yeah that is bad but it gets worse. Tampa was in cover 2 man under. only 4 man rush. no safeties blitzing. no safeties helping double team underneath. We had not,1 or 2 or 3 or 4 but 5 guys in MAN COVERAGE who could not get open? with just a 4 man rush? THAT IS DEPLORABLE. absolute fricking joke. not a single guy out of FIVE could beat man coverage? with no double teams or blitzers?

If you cannot beat cover 2 man under with only a 4 man rush you have serious issues with receivers and O-line. Oh and our Qb also. It is clear now brees locks on to guys like a damn rookie now. he does not go through his progressions like he used to. Thus all the picks staring down guys.

Also, going to a empty set is ok IF you have a dual threat QB. We do not have that. If not you should not be more than 4 wide with a RB to keep the D honest. Spread them out and run it.

When Payton was utilizing the running game, the Saints were winning. When he goes chuck and duck (Glanville on the run and shoot) they struggle.

Where was Thomas?
Where were the downfield plays to stretch and tire a defense?
Why is Brees throwing into triple coverage?
Why does Cadet drop passes that are in his hands...yesterday was not the first time

When they commit to using Ingram, the Saints have been almost unbeatable. Use Ingram more.

The statement in the article that struck me and that I fear to be true is...
quote:

There's a sense that Loomis and Payton have free reign to do as they please without the fear of any consequences.

Unfortunately, I don't see either going anywhere anytime soon.

Inactive yesterday.

Good question. He seems like he is forcing passes into areas he knows better than to throw into. Either he is desperate or,unfortunately, Father Time is catching up to Drew in that he doesn't have the same accuracy he once had. Also, he was staring down his receivers yesterday. Wasn't shifting his eyes to move the secondary, and resulting in him telegraphing his throws.

2006: 10-6 Playoffs
2007: 7-9
2008: 8-8
2009: 13-3 Superbowl
2010: 11-5 Playoffs
2011: 13-3 Playoffs
2012: Bountygate
2013: 11-5 Playoffs
2014: 7-9
2015: 7-9
2016: 5-8

This is the worst stretch in Payton's history as our HC and he's making some very head scratching calls, but looking at that record up there you have to give the guy a chance to rebuild and turn it around

Because Payton refuses to commit to the run game, so there is no reason for any DC to respect it, so every one of our receivers is fricked.

Never ever in my life would I have thought that I wouldn't give two shits about the Saints right now. I'm 51 and I have been a Saints fan since I was 6 years old watching every game with my mom. I remember getting hammered by my friends that were Cowboys, Steelers and Redskins fans.

Watching every game when we went 1-15. Riding around in my car listening to the point after with Buddy D. The last 3 years have sucked the life out of me. Not only because of the Saints but because of what the NFL has become!

100% agree with you. For whatever reason, I gave zero shits about the Tampa game, and when the game started, I ended up falling asleep and missed almost the entire 1st half. Woke up right when we got the safety, but I've never snoozed during a Saints game.

After that, I watched the game with disinterest and disgust, and was just counting down the minutes it would be over. Saints football is not fun at the moment.
