Why was K. Lewis not on Smith entire game

I know Lewis was on and off of him and I only remember one play they targeted Smith with Lewis on him and that was the PI that was very questionable. All the years of playing Smith I've never understood it. When McKenzie was our only good cb he didn't stick with Smith all game either. I would have liked Lewis, who doesn't back down and gets physical to follow him the entire game.
