He's under contract for this year.
That's great.

What about next year?
What kind of contract do you give a QB his age? If I'm not mistaken, he can't be franchised, so he may just hit FA and get a better offer somewhere.

Then what?

Shouldn't we have some kind of contingency plan going forward with regards to another QB?

I can't imagine the FO would have much leverage if there's nobody else on the roster...

Everybody is talking about defensive lineman, etc. I think its very likely we draft a QB high this year, maybe in the 1st.

seriously?????????????

there has been an endless number of threads about his future here. there are just a whole lot more hot topics going on right now

no franchise tag and no trade tag in his contract so after next year he is a FA and we have no say otherwise.

he said he wants to resign with us at that time at "fair market value" but that term all depends on your perception of "fair"

My point is we need a plan in case he does goes somewhere else, which we may have no control over.

Can't go into the draft next year without a QB.

Unless you're ready to fork out crazy big money to Brees and ignore his age.

Brees isn't going anywhere. He will retire as a Saint.

Im in the small minority that want a guy now to start developing. If we got an extra pick id take a QB. I agree with ya

well there are no sure starting QB in this years draft so its not there we have a choice in that. we could try "maybe" moving up getting Watson or hope we can get him with our pick and then hope after a year learning behind drew he is ready to lead the team. nothing is a great option

all we can do is try to resign brees and hope another team doesn't outbid us, or we have to hope for some premium QB talent to be in next years draft.

short of that its FA leftovers for us

it doesn't bode well for our future but all we can hope for is something to happen with us getting very lucky

What is there to talk about...he'll pass for a gazillion yards, but will commit a crucial turnover to cause us a playoff berth. Then we will have to gut the team again to resign him.

What's there to talk about? He will continue to help the team by us trading WR's and OL personnel that he makes great and keep us out of cap hell. It's not like anyone wants our defense personnel. If only Brees played defense, too.

1 of our first 3 picks will be a QB.
Bank on it.

No way FO doesn't have a contingency plan. They tried with Grayson and he blows. That's why they won't wait to a middle round.

QB is getting drafted early.
It's gonna happen.

They'll also want to have the 5th year option. He can basically redshirt for a year behind Brees, then gets a 4 yr deal. That leads me to beleive it will be in round one.

I'm willing to make a small wager if someone would like. I'll bet the saints draft a QB in the 1st round.

that's not gonna happen boxer, there are only 4 QB worth drafting in 1st round and 2 are top 5 picks and the other 2 are uniformly stated as being mid round guys and maybe late 1st round and none of them are considered as ready to be starters.

I do think 3 QB go in the first 10 picks thou because the jets and somebody else need a QB and the 49ers will take Watson #2, after that who knows but the saints are on crack if they draft a backup QB with the #11 pick unless its Watson that is there

if there is a project QB out there at 6-7 round I would be pissed if they did it but maybe then if I had to go along with it but even that late they damn well still need to be addressing defense and offensive line projects

I agree on that, just not sure on how much longer. How many NFL QBs have had success after 40?

well farvre kept trying to do it, but I wouldn't call it having any success, more like treading water and it was damn embaressing to see him out there struggling like that

I think drew could do it if he limited himself to shorter routes and gave up trying the long ball. he has skill and needs to keep things in shorter range and he can go another few years still playing at a high level.

its not about can he throw it that far, its about can he hit a target accurately at that distance and that's where he starts to show his age. the receivers get separation and run under his balls when he puts it up for them to adjust to and that's how he will have success stretching the field when needed but that's also where safeties can eat your lunch, especially if a receiver quits on a route or cuts the wrong way.

EDIT - the zip he once had on the ball is gone but not his knowledge of the game and how to make things work, that is why he is still good in spite of aging

And I believe Favre was 39 when he retired. I hope Drew can play until he's 50, but time always wins eventually. He'll be 39 this season. He's a smart guy, and from all accounts I imagine he'll be successful after retirement. I just don't see him being that guy desperately trying to hang on to football when it's too late.

Watch out for the kid from Texas Tech sneaking into round 1.

I'll also be watching the kid from Pitt.

Call it a gut feeling.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see the FO trade for as many picks next year as possible to find a way to get the kid from USC, who was the buzz at the combine.

I think it happens this year though.

People are gonna be pissed when we draft a QB in the 1st.

Personally I know this isn't going to be a very favorable statement but I think we should have traded Brees a season or two ago.

He hasn't been as sharp as he use to be and he's still one of the best in the league but eventually we have to start looking forward. I love what he's done for the city and he will forever be a Saint, but he's bleeding the franchise dry.

You see other QBs taking pay cuts to surround themselves with better talent then you have Brees asking for more and more money. That's just how I see it, I could very well be wrong!
