Every year the Saints is terribly over the cap, and his solution to fixing it is to give away a lot of the money to players in signing bonuses or some kind of bonus. He's done this a lot every year to get back under the cap, so, I don't get calling him a genius.

Think about this. DA has the 4th best winning % in Saints history. That is how bad our franchise was.

Finks and Loomis took us all the way to the top. And got us all our Div titles.

We are waiting for a bold move from Loomis that may or may not come.

He’s not, drafts have been bad and he just pushes contracts ten years into the future costing us the good young players we do draft.

As I recall Mickeys position prior to GM was Salary Cap strategist. (During the Muller Years)

He was excellent at what he did, and still is actually. The problem is kicking the can down the road was always supposed to be a rare thing on players that you had to keep like Brees, Jordan, Armstead.. you know franchise players.

Mickey got addicted to the drug and now every contract is structured that way and the monster is controlling him instead of him controlling the monster. He can't even bite the bullet and suck for a few years to clear it up because he has to restructure every contract he can to clear 50-80 million every year just to get to the starting line in March.

This doesn't make him a bad GM it makes him and out of control addict. You're not going to fire him and have anyone else come in and be able to do anything any different.

I fear the Saints will be the first team in history to fail to be able to get under the salary cap through normal means soon and will force the NFL to invent new ways to fine and punish them. This isn't like the NBA where if you're over the cap you just pay a luxury tax (Though if things keep going this way that might be the NFLs only recourse and new revenue stream)

People like to pretend Loomis is some sort of idiot but he is one of only 2 GMs with an actual accounting degree. Think Howie Roseman is the other.

Look, im not happy about his comments overall and they seem quite delusional on the surface. These last few years have been a dumpster fire and he is rightfully being called out. But i still want to see what he does with his mistake. Imo he has earned the right over the years for a few mistakes. Its his mess and he should be given a chance to clean it up

He is tantamount to being a co-owner. Not many geniuses can pull that trick off.

His comments on poor ticket sales being due to the economy are tone deaf. Its really the only dumb comments he has made

He works in an increasing cap into his deals.
With restructures and an increasing salary cap, he always makes it work. The NFL salary cap has gone down 1yr out of the last 30yrs. Next yr it goes up 7% to 240 million.

Who has called Loomis a genius? Getting below the salary cap just to field a team each year does not make him a genius.

This board does during most off-seasons

I didn't hate the can-kicking plan while you had Brees because you ride that horse until it dies...

But going all in on Carr (or any other non-Hall of Fame QB) when youre 8 digits over the cap was a very weird move

His comments were one of the few slips I've ever seen hm make. He's human and you can bet he's frustrated too but fans being fans and pissd off magnify things like this unnecessarily.

If it's true the Mickey is a "co-owner" of sorts then fans should ne glad because it makes the possibility the Loomis will just throw up his hands and walk away very remote. He's doing all that can be done to navigate the cap hell the team is in. No other person could could be brought in and do anything any different. It's a shite sandwich that has to be eaten and fans just have to accept it or not but it's happening.

Loomis has been the general manager for 22 years, and has fielded teams that have won 57% of their games in that span. The Saints have only fielded a losing team 7 times out of those 22 years, with 5 of those being 7-9 seasons and 1 being a 7-10 season. If you take out the 3-13 Katrina year, his Saints have won 59% of the games they have played.

He is a genius because he has fielded a competitive team that routinely wins more games than it loses for the last 22 years.

Signing guys like Mathieu, Maye, and especially Carr, were not necessary.

Loomis is to the Saints what Bobby Jindal was to Louisiana. One day, the scheme will self distruct.

Regressing towards the mean.

He had a HOF QB for the great majority of those seasons who was worth (arguably) two to three victories per season. The global (minus 2005) 57% win rate over his tenure goes to around 50-50.

Genius?

The Patriots from 2000-2022 won at 71%.

That WAS more like genius or possibly like having a HOF QB and not mostly wasting him.
