Why don't we talk about Safety as a need more?

We are VERY thin there.

We only really have:

Tyrann (old), Howden and Abram.

Both Howden an Abram had good moments last year, but I think you have to be a little nervous going into the season with only those 3. They could use more young talent there for sure.

I've felt we draft safety in 2nd round for a while.

Cooper DeJean would be a nice get to replace Mathieu, but he'll be long gone before pick 45.

For whatever reason, the position has been devalued. We saw that with the free agent market this year. A ton of the better and most expensive ones were cut and haven't re-signed. I don't know why, but the market for safeties took a huge nose-dive.

You've obviously got to have a couple, and I bet we draft at least one with one of those 4 5th rounders (or use 2 of them to move up into the 4th round for one). But it seems like most teams this year feel like they can always just sign a vet on the cheap after the draft if it doesn't fall to where they're picking and one's not BPA.

Teams are playing more CBs on the field at the same time, and there are guys who may have been Safeties 10 years ago that are now considered LBers

Saints are thin everywhere.

What position is busting with talent?

So much 2-high looks mean the position is simplified somewhat. Lots of guys can play back in a 2-high system.

The on the line SS guys are now LBs or not in the league, for the most part

I have been saying they need to draft safety early.

I thought they should've went after poyer in free agency.

Yea Cooper DeJean is the ideal RD2 pick after botching RD1

I think PFF had him as the #8 guy on their big board. Maybe teams aren't sure if he's a corner or safety and didn't want to pull the trigger. I think that has a lot of value, though. Or maybe they just assume he's a safety and his value has dropped along with the position. There's probably a "white CB" stigma at play somewhere too, even if subconscious.

Are there any players on the board that you would swap 2nds and give next year's 3rd to go up and get? I'm almost convinced we're trading Latt and will have another team's 2nd and/or 3rd from next year. But even if we don't, do you see value with anybody still hanging around? (just a 3rd, taking next year's 2nd off the table. Or maybe next year's 4th if it's just a few spots).

We have needs at almost every single position. Add it to the list

For whatever reason, CBs went late last night. I thought Mitchell was a premier talent at CB, too. Didn't make sense.

And yeah there are 2 issues with DeJean, one which may take him off our board. He only really has zone film and likely isn't a boundary CB. We do need a NB, so the boundary stuff doesn't matter, but we run primarily man. However, that's less of an issue at NB and all the choice routes, which make NB much more zone-y

Too many holes and poor cap management should keep this team from mortgaging future picks to slightly improve their current pick.

We don’t need a boundary corner. He will play S or Nickel for us. I also like Tyler Nubin as that center field ball hawking Free Safety

Same reason they should've traded back.

Especially with how the first round went.

Any Intel on if they tried to trade back?

The draft never lines up like that. After pick 45 it's going to be a long wait till all those 5th round comp picks.
