What do you think Davis Tull's chances are of starting at OLB next year?

I liked what I saw of him in limited pre-season play. His college tape is excellent. I could see him starting at OLB next year. If so, that would mean our 3 starting LB's all came from the 2015 draft.

Davis Tull – Tennessee –Chattanooga
Tull is a fun guy to watch on tape because he makes plays all over the field and plays every down from snap to whistle. He is a top competitor who dominates the FCS level of competition. In his four years at UT – Chattanooga, he had a whopping 37 sacks including 19.5 the last two seasons.
While NFL scouts have known about Tull for quite some time, draft fans found out about him at the combine. At Indy, he weighed in a 6025 – 246. He didn’t run because of a hamstring issue but did leap 42.5” in the vertical jump and also had an 11’ standing long jump. Earlier this month, he ran at his pro day and timed 4.57.
On tape, Hull is a relentless competitor who makes plays from sideline to sideline. He has top instincts, plays with strength, and is consistently around the ball. While he is a good run defender, he is best as a pass rusher, where he shows an explosive bull rush as well as speed off the edge. He is good at putting counter moves together.
While Tull played down as a defensive end in college, he will be used as an OLB in the NFL. He will need to get comfortable in pass coverage. With his instincts, intelligence, and athleticism, that shouldn’t be a problem.
On the downside, Hull had labrum surgery shortly after his pro day. While he should be ready for the start of training camp, there is a possibility that he does miss some time. When you factor in that, as well as the fact that he will not be able to participate in OTA’s, and he is from an FCS school, his draft stock could drop a little. Still, he should get drafted in the third or fourth round. This is a player with a lot of upside and a bright future, so my thinking is that the injury will hurt him a little but not much.

Although the hamstring again tightened up on him about halfway through his first 40-yard dash, Tull was timed at 4.57 seconds at UTC's pro day. The FCS All-America defensive end is projected as an outside linebacker in the NFL and measured in at 6-foot-2 1/2 and 244 pounds.
He did not make a second 40 attempt but didn't need to. The 4.57 would've tied him for fifth best among all linebackers at the combine and led one scout to turn to another and say, "I've seen enough. He can move."
"It's been a little bit of a crazy process and I didn't run as well as I had before the injury, but I think I may have helped myself today," Tull said. "But my opinion isn't the one that matters. It's what those scouts thought. They're the ones who will help decide whether I get drafted and how high."
Tull, who will have surgery to repair a labrum injury in his right shoulder later this week, had been laser-timed at 4.49 before the injury and tested well in the events he tried at the combine. He had the best vertical jump (42.5 inches) and second-best broad jump (11 feet) among linebackers and completed 26 repetitions at 225 pounds in the bench press, which tied two others players for fifth best among linebackers.

I mean I think he'll be a solid player as well. But it's expecting a whole lot for a guy missing his whole rookie year to come in and take a starting spot.

quote:Physically, yes. But the year off might help him as far as learning the playbook goes and with making the transition from college DE to NFL OLB. He runs a 4.57 40 at 6'2-246. He's fast enough. Not sure what he's like in coverage. He'd have to beat out Ellerbe and Hawthorne.

We will either draft a guy or get someone via free agency. One of Ellerbe/Hawthorne will be gone next year. Maybe both.

Isn't he on IR for the year?

Dude could be the Saints Kuechly.

After Humber and Coleman, I want football players. Not guys with good measurables.

And Tull is a productive player. The questions about him don't concern his intangibles. They concern his ability to transition from a hands-on-the-ground DE to a stand up OLB in the pros. He's a high motor, productive football player.

Tull has a better chance of starting at DE than OLB next year. He's a pass rush specialist that plays with his hand in the dirt, which is perfect since they switched back to a 4-3. A 5th rounder who is the situational pass rusher is not a disappointment going in to year 2.

Recent history suggests we do not do well with injury RS players.
I like Tull's Athleticism and PJ Williams' upside but I refuse to put any stock in players who may have only been available for such a small sample size of camp.
At this point if either can come back and claim a roster spot I would consider it as a bonus draft choice from next years class.
At this point we have enough success to go around for the 2015 Draft if Peat, Anthony and Kikaha are only scratching the surface of their potential. Throw in Swann and Murphy as solid contributors and that is already more than enough win for now.

Brain fart. Scratch Humber and replace with Martez Wilson.

Kuechly is a MLB. I'm thinking Tull will be more like a rich man's Paul Kruger or a poor man's Clay Matthews when he primarily lined up outside.

Don't forget Davison!
I'm going to consider PJ Williams and Tull as being part of next season's rookie class and whatever we get out of them is a bonus. I think they only have 6 picks next year, too, so they would help that number.
