Do you think he's worth the money he's being paid? Product of bad scheme? Players suck so bad around him it's making him not play up to what he's capable of doing?

Goddamn this organization has made some terrible contract moves that are going to put us in holes for years.

He's practically invisible in our defense. definitely not a play maker or a difference maker.

He obviously isn't worth what he's being paid

I don't think he's a bad player, but nothing we've seen has been near elite

Not at all if you've been paying attention

Interesting. Guess it's just soaking up these last bad contracts for dead money but Browner will surely be added to the long list. He might not be as big of a hit but he's still dead money that could be used elsewhere.

The entire problem revolves around the draft. Do good there and you don't get desperate in FA to fill holes. Hopefully shuffling that around is bright for the future. I think Loomis has been a problem for many years but that apparently will never get addressed.

I also think Byrd is being used completely wrong in this defense if you followed how he played at Buffalo. He's better in a robber role where he can use his instincts but instead he's being asked to sit over the top and pick the slack of suck up around him. They try to use him like an Earl Thomas covering the entire field. It doesn't work while KV gets to be the guy in a similar role Byrd needs to be in. KV is not helping Byrd at all. We need another S that can allow Byrd to play to his strengths. I'm ready to write KV as another bust in the long line of bad secondary drafts for Saints.

he is incredibly soft. He is afraid to hit TEs and RBs but likes to flex his muscle and prove he is a big hitter against WRs.

I followed Byrd in college and his time at Buffalo. The guy is no doubt a legit FS. His price tag has been way too high for his statistical performance, no doubt. I will say, there have been many plays during the season where he was near the WR on a touchdown or big play that he came a LONG ways to get there and almost make a play on the ball. Basically, most safeties wouldn't even be in the picture, but he was, which also made it look like his man making the catch.

I'll add, when I go to the games, he seems to be an in your face type player and always trying to pump other guys up. He seems kinda bland in interviews but doesn't come across that way on the field. As of on the field, Byrd is the least of our problems, of course as of salary cap, well it is a problem. I just don't feel there is another FS in the league that would have done any better for us this year, with this defense. Hopefully next year he can go back to being a ballhawk. He is a good tackler, and has caused a couple turnovers, we will see if he can build on that.

Well this just isn't close to being true. He's been good in run support and even has made some stops behind the LoS against running backs.

He's a pretty sure tackler

And why would you try to lay big hits on someone that is more likely to break a big hit tackle?

Yeah, seems like we have posters on ST that have never watched a game

He'd start on more than half the teams in the NFL if that is what you're asking

I think he should take a pay cut next year. I mean he might have another phantom injury so you never know.

it seems like he's done better this year than last year but I guess not by much.

what exactly happened on the play yesterday when Anthony was covering Ted fricking Ginn? I mean surely Anthony was supposed to have safety help right? Could be that Byrd was helping Browner, I do remember on the last TD by Carolina Byrd had the over the top help for Browner and it left one of the reserves in single coverage.

Wilson was supposed to have deep zone coverage and fell asleep

Honestly I think Byrd is actually getting close to his old form. He seems to shake off a little rust/fear of re-injury every game and has gone from 2 seconds late to the pile to being in on every play within his vicinity. I think if we can have finish this season healthy and allow him to take that confidence into an entire offseason of work, he will be a top Safety again next year. We do need to add some players to help, but I think we might finally get a portion of what the organization paid for.
