Obviously this would make him a FA but how many teams will have enough $ available to actually sign Graham?

Could this be an option for Saints?

thatd be a horrible move for the Saints. there are quite a few teams with the money to do that.

we would get nothing for him. We arent the Chargers.

They won't.

Many, many do, and would. They just won't give up the two 1s required as a Franchise Tag.

I'd hope we'd trade him before withdrawing the tag and essentially releasing him.

yeah thats the idea if they truly dont want that cap hit on the books and feel like he isnt worth it. but letting him walk for nothing would be the worst option. but Loomis has proven over and over (reggie and sproles), hes great at not letting players go for free.

eta: players with value i should say

Even if we didn't get two 1st round picks, we could trade him away for one 1st and another later pick and not let him walk for nothing.

Hell, trade him for two 2nd round picks. Just don't let him go for nothing.

Hopefully it won't be an issue and we won't have to worry about any of this. I'd much rather he remain a Saint no matter how this all plays out.

The only way Graham comes out of this with a better contract situation is if he is designated a pure WR (not going to happen). Even if he is given a hybrid TE/WR designation and they meet in the middle on the tag price, Graham loses his leverage for one main reason. This designation would still be in the realm of what he is worth, and the option of franchising him next year will compel him to sign a long-term deal. Yes, the FO will have to find money somewhere to pay him, but you are looking at coming up with around $2million (right?), they can get that by pushing some contracts again. Not optimal but they can make it work. After they get out of the red they can elect to shop him around this year or even next off-season.

Bottom line I think he signs a contract, unless he gets designated a WR and then I doubt we can afford it.

When you factor in current cap space, it may not even be that much maneuvering.

Why the hell would they do that

All they'd have to do is honor the tag and then trade him to someone else for something less than 2 1sts. I'm sure someone wouldn't mind giving a 1st and something else for him. The Saints would frick themselves. So, no...it's not an option.
