The excuses on behalf of Payton are unbelievable

You have regulars on this forum going out of their way to defend him not calling the plays.
Why the hell does an injured leg prevent him from calling plays? It's retarded.
My post yesterday was ill-conceived because I was incorrectly harping on him being on the sidelines (this was based on reports from Tampa Bay that his headset wasn't working from the locker room).
There is literally no reason why he can't call the plays from the pressbox.
There is also no sane reason why he can't be in a wheelchair to allow him to get down to the locker room to address the team at halftime.
He's slacking and he needs to be called out.

Isn't there a rule that limits the amount of communication he can have with the coaches on the field?

you catch alot of shite, but with Payton you're dead on...I don't think his heart is in it which is a shame because he is the best coach in the league when he's not eating hot dogs and dipping in a sky box

If this is true THEN he should be on the field in a wheelchair safely near the bench with backups surrounding him in case a player crashes into the sidelines.
The NFL is a multi-billion dollar industry. It is asinine that the Saints and the NFL can't work together to come up with a solution to allow our coach who was injured in the line of duty to be able to call a game.
I think that the NFL would be willing but that the Saints and Payton have been slacking.
And to suggest that Payton needs to be prowling the sideline 10 inches from the field in order to make good playcalls is ridiculous. Every NFL stadium has videoscreens that are real-time and would be good enough to allow Payton to call the plays.
I guarantee you that the NFL would allow a television feed to be hooked up to Payton's wheelchair or seat to allow him to see the game in high quality and make plays.
I suspect that Payton doesn't want to look like an invalid on national TV and that's what the issue is.

Alright, I'm getting called out all day for shite but there is no way Payton's heart isn't in this.
Dude got dealt a very serious injury and is doing what he can. He can't be on the sideline. He can't move. He would be a sitting duck if players crashed into the sideline.
I don't put any blame on Payton. Dude was back to work days after major surgery, which is more than could be said about any of us

Unless he has a police escort blocking everybody else(which he definitely isn't getting on the road) from moving he's not making it from press box to locker room in time.

I've been to the Edward Jones Dome and I'm telling you it wouldn't be that big of a deal. He could have made it in plenty of time. It's a modern stadium built in the 1990's with elevators and handicap accessible floors.
He's too proud to use a wheelchair IMO.

well since he is not doing anything that is not hot dog eating or dipping, perhaps he could head to the locker room a little early...we didn't need to be down 17-0 for him to realize that we were sucking, that was evident by the end of the first quarter
Posted on 10/31/11 at 1:16 pm to DelU249
Exactly. If he's not calling the plays than why couldn't he at least leave 10 minutes early to give the Saints an arse-chewing at halftime.

I'm assuming this thread is mostly a joke.
Payton doesn't block for the QB nor stuff the run. Players have to be held accountable as much as the coaches do

And who generally holds players accountable? A guy up in the press box dipping? Or a guy in the locker room screaming bloody mary?

coaches hold players accountable, but thats hard to do when you are too busy chilling upstairs
EDIT: while this thread might be a joke, I'm serious. This guy gets paid millions of dollars, so I don't think it is too much of a stretch for him to be able to TALK to his team at halftime

There's only so much a coach can do, but the solution may be a few coaches getting the axe this offseason (linebacker, Dline, oline, even 3G).

Think about it this way:
What kind of example does it set for the players to see their leader grabassing up in the press box during a game?
You think the Saints didn't see the clips of Payton smirking and dipping and eating a chili dog during the Colts game?
That shite is UNPROFESSIONAL. It does not inspire men to leave their blood, sweat, and tears on the field.
Payton is being a TERRIBLE leader of this team regardless of whether or not he's technically "slacking".
He may not be "slacking" by the strictest definition, but he's also not going the extra mile for this franchise.

I think a huge problem is since 09 we have been drafting defensive players and 3g is the one making the call on who he wants on defense.

All I can say is there isn't much he can do in the booth. He can help the team prep all week and once he is in that booth, communication is difficult.
Him eating a hotdog or dipping is pretty insignigant if there isn't much he can do.
He didn't twist an ankle, he fricked his leg up badly. So now we have to add rehab to his normal daily routine. All I'm saying is I'm not ready to call him out. That's an extremely difficult position to be in.

let's face it, this is just a depressing loss...I'm just going to enjoy LSU's big win this saturday, and take the saints one week at a time and try not to focus on the big picture. Just enjoy them week to week

I don't think it's insignificant.
There's a reason why his first instinct was to try and hide his hotdog and dip cup when he saw he was on camera.
There's a reason why PFT and other sites used the images as headlines and gags throughout the week.
He knew what he was doing was unprofessional. Sure it was cute and funny when we were skullfricking the Colts, but it's almost giving off a "substitute teacher" vibe to the team. Looks like they feel like their boss is on vacation.

Harder to relay plays from box to Carmichael to brees. Box can not have direct contact with player on field.
