The season after Katrina, the the NFL and the Saints were determined to help rebuild the spirit of New Orleans. The new players brought in had a chance to renew their careers and the city. They were on a greater mission than just playing football.

These players had heart and soul on the line every Sunday. When the Saints won the Superbowl, everyone believed there were more championships to come.

No team ever remains the same. Players left for larger contracts, some retired, others grew complaciant and the coaching staff migrated to other teams.

Bountygate stunned the organization and it has never fully recovered. Their focus was lost.

Benson buys into the NBA and Loomis is splitting time between football and basketball operations. Payton's playcalling becomes predictable. The Saints draft becomes absymal while they start signing older free agents to large contracts that the team never receives any value from these players.

Everyone in the organization is content getting paid well while the fans are left with "coach speak". "We'll have to look at the film". "We have to correct the mistakes". "We have to work hard and improve every week".

Most of all, the Saints forgot what made them so successful. They played for New Orleans, the state and the region first and themselves second.

It all seems so long ago and I miss those days.

Yep, it's over bro. It was fun while it lasted.

The Saints aren't one of your elite NFL franchises that are traditional winners and that always field hard-nosed competitive teams. They got lucky in 2009 and won it all and had some Division crowns and play off wins sprinkled in between.

Even during the glory years of the Payton Brees Era, the Saints were never a well rounded team. They were a finesse team that completely depended on Drew Brees for the wins. No defense. No running game. Reminded me of Dan Marino's Dolphins teams, except that Marino was never lucky enough to win a Superbowl. Never a complete team excellent in all phases of the game. Actually, the truth is that Marino's Dolphins teams seemed better than the Payton/Brees Saints teams, but, that's debatable.

You thought that the Saints would just build on 2009's
success and sustain success. Didn't happen. I noticed beginning in 2010 that the team did not get better. 2011's Division crown was great, but we had a decisive exit from the playoffs. 2012, 13, 14 -- steady decline. Now, it's pretty obvious that Payton and Loomis had and have no idea how to build on and sustain success. A steady decline since 2009 and now into the Abyss.

Tough luck for Saints fans. Go Saints Go.
