Woah, woah woah! I was the 1st person to suggest this a month ago. Use the search button next time.

Also I said we should after a LT if not Austin. Finally, last option I stated was to trade to Minnesota for either their 23rd or 25th pick and draft defense.

Not so fast my friend...from December.

I agree we need to go DE or OLB but I think it will be hard to pass up Tavon Austin if he is BPA. Perfect fit on our team.

It's getting to the point in the NFL where no defense is really "great." Having one that is simply serviceable is enough to win in the NFL.

You miss the Superbowl?

Fair? Atlanta has Roddy White and Julio Jones. With Tony Gonzalez for good measure.

What does that have to do with Lance Moore? Is his skill set contingent upon Atlanta's receivers?

Anyone sticking up for Lance Moore needs to unjust their panties and look at facts. Lance Moore is great at what he does, he's a nice safety blanket who's got great hands and runs good routes. He's dependable. He's not a difference maker or should i say a gamebreaker. What Tavon brings to this team is YAC. This team is horrible with YAC. Sproles and Thomas lead our team. Colston is next but still way down the NFL list.

LINK

Lance Moore was 147 in the NFL with total yards after catch. He had over 1,000 yards last year and is surrounded with guys that who had just 200-500 yards total with the same YAC production.

Tavon will be that guy in the offense who makes plays after the catch. Opens up so much with Tavon, Jimmy and maybe Morgan running deep and others doing what they do.

Tavon is Percy Harvin 2.0 but will be better. Percy was always in the top of the league for total yards. And from what I know Tavon doesn't have an injury history like Percy. I love this pick at 15, but I also like the 23 and 25 picks from Minnesota.

Yea no one is rippingon Moore by calling a spade a spade. We desperately need to upgrade our WR unit. Again, I'm not out their campaigning for us to take Tavon at 15, but if we do it will be the opposite of a moronic move as the "defense only" crowd would have you believe.

For as good as this offense has been lately we really struggle at times attacking defenses horizontally. We use Sproles at times, but he's limited due to coming out of the backfield. We also use Colston and Moore to sit in zones, but when it comes to crossing routes and stretching a defense horizontally we struggle. Guys like Henderson technically have elite speed, but they don't have the instantaneous first step someone like Austin has.

This offense has been predicated on stretching defenses vertically. We live for the seams between safeties/CBs and over the heads of the linebackers. If we could add in the underneath element with Tavon it would be insane. Those arrow routes we used to run with Moore will be 100x more effective with Tavon.

Again, no one is saying toss Moore to the wolves, but he is what he is, and Tavon would be a huge upgrade in this offense.

Like I said before, Austin wouldn't be my first choice at 15, but he could be to us, what drafting Randall Cobb was to the Packers.

If the Saints draft a WR at 15, it should be Cordarrelle Patterson without question.

As others have said, Lance Moore is a slot receiver, and a damn good one. It makes no sense to draft another slot player when there is a gaping hole on the outside.

Cordarrelle Patterson would give the Saints the deep speed & size that Henderson & Meachem once provided to stretch defenses on the outside.

Still doesn't make any more sense to bring in a slot guy like Tavon to compete against a slot guy like Moore who has the position on lock-down.

But if we bring in a WR it should be a guy like Patterson who has both speed AND size to compete with an still-unproven, but promising WR like Morgan...on the outside.

The only thing I would say about YAC and tavon austin is that it's not a given that he'll be successful in the NFL.. I'm not trying to pass this along as a fact, just a thought, but what does he weigh? 180?

Lets talk about value for a second.

I dont see the value in any single WR when you have a guy like Drew Brees who slings it to 8+ different targets every game. Then add the running plays where WRs are just asked to get in the way for a minute.

Now compare that to a OLB/DE who has a chance to make a play and can impact EVERY defensive snap. I can see some value there.

sure a "presence" of an elite WR can force defenses to play you differently, but thats a HUGE gamble to assume any drafted WR will be elite, and one thats not likely to happen the way Drew distributes the ball.

Draft front 7 for value, and hope you hit.

Lol, think what you think. I'd love for you to disagree with anything in my post or point out any cliches and tell me why. Some of us coach football. You call things cliches when in fact it's just the language of the game.

Again, I'd love to see you breakdown for me how the Saints offense isn't predicated on vertical principles and attacking the seams. Three and four verticals are by a large margin our favorite route concepts.

quote:

we were first in overall passing last year so why the hell do you think we desperately need to upgrade our WR unit

The Texans' defense was first in the NFL for the majority of the league (they might have finished that way, I don't remember), but I think it's plainly obvious they could improve elements of their defense. There's such a thing called looking past the numbers.

Our passing numbers were a result of numerous things that have nothing to do with our WR talent. First, we struggled to stop anyone and thus were in numerous shootouts. Secondly, and this isn't brought-up enough when discussing the loss of SP, we started very slow in almost every game. When we got behind we were forced to pass at an alarmy rate last year. We also have one of the more accurate QBs in a perfect system to utilize his talents.

Question for you, where would you rate our receiving unit?

I don't disagree with taking Patterson, but I do disagree with so many people calling Moore a slot WR. We use him on the outside much more than people actually give him credit for. His size would make you think of a slot WR, but he's more of an outside possession WR than a quick, game-breaking slot WR.
