2014 first round pick Dominique Easley played exceedingly well for the New England Patriots last season when he was healthy. That makes his release on Wednesday all the more surprising.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport Easley was released on Wednesday after playing only 22 games over two seasons. Tom Curran of Comcast Sports New England first reported the news.

While injuries have been an issue for Easley, it's hard not to wonder if there is more to the story here. Patriots coach Bill Belichick called Easley an "explosive player that is very disruptive" before last season. Easley only played 275 snaps last year, but he looked like one of the team's best defensive players when healthy. To put it in perspective: ProFootball Focus ranked him as the No. 12 defensive tackle in the league despite the limited playing time.

Easley tore his ACL in both knees in college and ended his rookie season with a knee injury. He tore his quadriceps in 2015.

Yall gonna hammer on Belichick and the Pats for releasing a first round pick?

Or does that just work against us?

If his release is not due to character issues, then this is a definite "we should." He'd probably sign on the cheap (or is it a waiver with him?), which is worth the injury risk for a valuable player. I remember many of us wanting to draft him that year in the 2nd round

We don't release our shitty 1st round picks. We sign their over priced 5th extension.

Dominique Easley had a pressure 1 in every 6 pass rushes last year; best for DTs. Aaron Donald 1 in 6.3, Geno Atkins 1 in 6.7.

He should go to waivers, right?

If no character issues, I would certainly give him a shot.

He has less than four years of NFL experience, he will likely be claimed on waivers

Something does not smell right. Overthecap shows that his salary this year is fully guaranteed, so they ate his salary this year and accelerated his 2017 prorata share of his bonus (so it cost them over $1 million cash and nearly $3 million in cap space to release him.

And probably by someone with a higher waiver claim than us.
