First-round drafted defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins has come to the New Orleans Saints with high expectations.

And, according to one measure, those expectations put him behind only three other rookies in the 2016 NFL Draft class.

In a list of 100 rookies posted by NFL.com, Rankins is projected as the No. 4 impact rookie for the 2016 season.

"The Saints had the second-worst run defense in the NFL last year," NFL.com wrote. "The need was clear, and Sean Payton has suggested Rankins can be an every-down player. His quickness as a pass rusher was evident at the Reese's Senior Bowl in January."

quote:

Other Saints on the list of 100 are receiver Michael Thomas at No. 15 and safety Vonn Bell at No. 23.

The Saints are one of two teams with two players in the top 15. The Jaguars have Jack at No. 2 and cornerback Jalen Ramsey at No. 7.

We had an excellent draft and the best UDFA in the league. Those who really pay attention can see this

The Saints have lost a scout.

Brendan Prophett, who served as an area scout last season, has been hired to serve as the director of pro scouting for the Detroit Lions, according to a source.

Prophett previously served as the New York Jets’ director of pro personnel before being fired last offseason. He spent 15 seasons with the organization, also serving as a regional scout, pro scout and assistant director of pro scouting.

New Orleans revamped its scouting staff last offseason, also hiring Cody Rager and Jon Sandusky.

Rager previously worked with assistant general manager Jeff Ireland in Miami.

Sandusky previously served as the Cleveland Browns’ director of player personnel.

Detroit is revamping its front office, having hired Bob Quinn to serve as general manager this offseason. He previously worked for the New England Patriots.

InsideTheLeague.com first reported Prophett’s move.

When your scouts are being poached and promoted, your doing something right. Two good drafts in a row is getting noticed by other clubs. I am celebrating this draft.

I'm saying it's time for the Saints to hit big on a 1st Rd defensive tackle. you only can miss so many times...

2008 Ellis meh
2003 Sullivan Hall of Shame
1987 Shawn Knight HOS

I dunno there's just sumpin abut Rankins. The more I see, read, and hear he impresses more. Focused and ready to go to work.

For all the glories of the offense these past ten years how cool would it be for the D to develop with a Defensive ROY type leading the way in 2016. Just getting to average run of the mill defense and we might see even an old model Brees elevating his game another notch.

Middle of the road defense that can get Brees and company an extra 1-2 possessions a game would be just fine with me
