And the funniest part is people blame Sean Payton and his supposedly big mouth as to why the chiefs knew to jump the saints. When in truth, it was Mahomes himself who told the chiefs to jump the Saints
Mahomes never said to jump the Saints. He just tole KC that if they wanted him, they needed to get up in the top 12 or so. The thought was that Houston had a lot of interest. and also had a need for a QB.

This. All the times they traded up and tossed future 1s out the door, but when you have a chance to move up only a few spots to get your franchise QB you cross your fingers and wait? arse holes, all of them.

Revisionist history.

The Saints had the 11th pick. Very few mock drafts had Mahomes going before 11. Trubisky was the higher rated QB. The Saints weren't trading into the top 3-5 to get a QB who looked at as a bit of a "project". Once the draft got past the Jets as No. 6, it looked like Mahomes being avaialbe at 11 was going to be a reality. No. 7 (Chargers - Rivers), No. 8 (Panthers - Newton) and No. 9 (Bengals - Dalton) weren't in the QB market. Most figured Buffalo at 10 wanted a CB...which would probably be Lattimore. All the Saints had to do was wait it out...until KC made what will probably go down as the boldest and maybe the best draft day trade ever by paying a ransom to jump from 27 to 10 SPECIFICALLY to get ahead of New Orleans. Unlike the Saints who could have reasonably expected Mahomes to be available at 11, KC knew there was zero chance he would be there at 27. So that HAD to make a move.

In hindsight the Saints should have made a move up. But as the draft was unfolding there wasn't anything to suggest that would be necessary.

The information I want to know (and maybe it's been discussed before) is who tipped KC off that the Saints were taking Mahomes? You don't make that big of a jump to specifically get in front of one particular team unless you absolutely know you have to.

By all accounts Sean Payton had fallen in love with Mahomes and thought he’d be a great QB. My point is that they also felt that way about Davenport, Turner, etc. So why in this case didn’t you try to move up a few spots to secure Drew’s replacement?

So it’s not revisionist history is the sense that regardless of what Mahome’s grade was for every other team, where his projected slot was, the Saints/Payton valued him enough to take him had he dropped to 13. To be arrogant or foolish enough to think no other team in the league could possibly value him as highly turned out to bite Payton in the arse.

Now it’s highly possible Payton has embellished his interest in order to show how smart he was to have believed Mahomes would turn into a star. Any way you slice it it’s a huge miss on the Saints part and all the other teams who passed on him. What could have been.

See 1 down vote so far. Damn Payton if you would quit browsing sports forums looking for people talking bad about you, maybe one day you would draft a quarterback worth a shite lol

Pretty sure i read in the jeff duncan book with direct quotes from payton that they had lattimore and mahomes graded similarly, and were leaning lattimore, but if lattimore got picked right before them they would take mahomes. So yeah, we wouldve taken him if other dominoes had fallen, but they didnt

Mahomes himself. He told KC's front office what teams were serious about him because he wanted to end up in KC. I heard him say it on the Kelce brothers podcast

Just confirmed? He's been patting himself on the back for not drafting the best player in the league for a while.

But Sean has embellished this over the years.
He was never shy about trading up to get his guy, so if you felt that strongly about Pat, you go get him.

You don’t sit back and say well I’m happy if I come away with him or lattimore

You are 1000% correct

Could be the worst draft blunder in NFL history

I have no idea why more Saints fans don’t understand this

Sean is so full of shite.

He also chirped last year (in the middle of an mvp type season for Lamar Jackson) that he wanted to draft Jackson in the ‘18 draft, but was overruled by the rest of the draft room. If you believe that horseshite, I have a bridge to sell you.

Lucky for Mahomes that it went this way. We wouldn’t be competing for super bowls with him. The NFL wouldn’t allow it. They decided they were done with NOLA being a contender after the 2011 season.

Reported by who?

ESPN, during the draft.... you know how they cut away to Schefter after some picks to give a little insight/analysis? yeah, they did that...

it has been known that we wanted Mahomes with our pick, but KC jumped us... how that all went down, dunno... but again, it was reported, on that very night, that we had plans of taking him with our pick, had he been there

After the year he had last year I'm not making fun of Nix. His td/Int ratio was at the top. As was his completion %. Also had more starts than just about anyone in history. Question is what's his ceiling.

Payton is full of shite. He also “wanted” to trade for romo… of course we hear that after romo had some success.

He confirmed that in all the years he traded up, he failed to trade up 1 spot to grab a franchise QB. That was a huge miscalculation on his part.

There are several players who Payton traded up to get. We can all judge how that turned out. Those moves are on the record.

Then there are all the “if only” moved Payton wanted to do but didn’t. Who really knows how to judge them because none are on the record.

Payton had as much power as any head coach in the NFL while he was head coach of the Saints. Multiple people have said he ran the show. I don't see Payton peacocking about how he was wrong about trading up for Davenport.
