We had an udfa 2-3 years ago that did the same thing. He was also an O-Lineman IIRC.

After participating in the New Orleans Saints rookie minicamp this past week, undrafted rookie free agent offensive lineman Alex Hoffman has reportedly decided to retire and pursue a different career path.

According to a Helena (Montana) Independent Record report, Hoffman's retirement comes on the heels of him finding out he'd been accepted into the St. Louis University medical school.

Hoffman's retirement was initially reported by NO.Football.

A former high school quarterback who led his team a Utah state title, Hoffman blossomed into a stout offensive tackle at Carroll College, finishing his career as a three-year starter and two-time All-Conference player.

You can retire from the nfl without ever being on a team?

pretty sure its just a paperwork technicality so if he wants to unretire the team he was on still has them signed to the team based on whatever deal he had at the time

I would say we are damn near whiff territory with this UDFA class at this point.

We brought in 11, & we still have 8 left...
-RB Stevie Scott III
-TE Dylan Soehner
-OL Mike Brown
-P Nolan Cooney
-DT Josiah Bronson
-LB Shaq Smith
-CB Bryce Thompson
-CB Lawrence Woods

3 that aren't on the roster anymore
-OL Alex Hoffman - Medical School
-CB Trill Williams - Claimed by Dolphins
-S Eric Burrell - Still unsigned, but it was said he can still be an option in the near future

Hitting on 1 or 2 would be nice. I'd be happy with just 1 though.

I'm old enough to remember Jim "Doc" Kovach who graduated pre-med before joining the Saints and completed his training while playing.

Good luck to this kid, hope it all works out for him.

Jim Kovach did the same thing in the 80's. He was a pretty good LB for the Saints.

No. He was invited to rookie mini-camp, & he earned a spot. We only signed 11 udfa's this year.

hope he’s personally not a case of “what if I had stuck it out”. That can haunt him the rest of his life.

Medical school will always be there. The NFL won’t

Imagine being so afraid of NFL competition that you would preemptively work your arse off for 4 years in college to graduate at least Magna Cum Laude so you could get accepted into medical school so you wouldn't have to go to an NFL training camp.
