Good depth signing. Hopefully Fairley plays this year, b/c he can rush the passer & stop the run.

If he can't go...then at least we have 2 pass rushers(Rankins & Onyemata) up the middle, & 2 run stuffers.

Pretty sure we have to cut someone now...I think this puts us at 91 players

My reaction is kind of like the Jewish guy about chicken soup. It can't hurt.

agreed

I think this guy is coming in as a camp body, but im also thinking fairley career is over and I get the impression that the saints feel the same way

The Saints continue to try to add quality parts to a defense that needs all the help it can get.

According to a tweet from his agent, veteran defensive tackle Tony McDaniel has signed with the Saints.

McDaniel was a solid rotational player for the Seahawks last year, but generated no visible interest on the free agent market. He went through Saints minicamp on a tryout basis, and they apparently liked what they saw.

The 32-year-old also gives them some experienced depth while they wait for word on defensive tackle Nick Fairley, who is undergoing tests for a heart condition that may keep him from returning to the field.

Yeah, I am getting worried that Fairley may not be returning.

He had a decent season last year.

Games - 16
Games Started - 10
Total Tackles - 43
No sacks but 3 passes defended

If we lose Fairley...I could actually see Davison & McDaniel on 1st downs/running downs, then bringing in Rankins & Onyemata for passing downs. Rankins could change that if he improves against the run though.

There was a report that the Saints were completely in the dark and that Fairley was not returning calls.

Fairley living up to his reputation if true.

If you listen to Payton's comments, it sounds like the Saints have been in touch with him and are up to date with the medicals. The report I saw was that some teammates did not get return calls.

I don't know Rankins grade vs the run, but there's no way he's not a 3 down lineman on this team.

Last year, he graded out pretty bad against the run...like one of the worst in the league. I think he'll improve, but based on last year...McDaniel would be the better option against the run.

I'm confident he'll be a 3 down starter in time though. Hopefully, it's this year.

He played well last year and disrupted the middle, good signing!

Until I hear otherwise I expect we will see Fairley.

Update on transactions...

OG Cameron Lee cut
LS Jesse Schmitt cut - this leaves Chase Dominguez as the only LS on the roster.
WR Dan Arnold cut
OC Thomas Gafford signed. Last played with Denver. Looks like they're trying to find a legit Center just in case Unger isn't ready for week 1.

That should put us at 89 players

Gafford is a long snapper.

We don't need sacks from the NT. 43 tackles from the interior is legit.
