Per source, the Saints have exercised S Kenny Vaccaro's 5th-year option. He's the first player in the '13 draft class to have his picked up.

Not sure if we have official numbers on 5th-year option cost (paging @Jason_OTC) but I think it should be about $5.5M for Vaccaro in '17.

Vaccaro's 2017 salary will be average of 3rd-through-25th highest-paid safeties in 2016. Last year that number was $5.278M.

For that price he better play. I honestly don't think he's that great and a big reason why Byrd's play suffers back there. I believe Byrd should be in Vac's role right now as more around the LOS and a nickel-type roamer. Problem is KV sucks when he's sitting in that traditional over the top S role. Byrd has the speed to cover both sides of the field but he's not Earl Thomas. Nobody is and they're using him wrong, IMO.

KV is OKAY for his role in the defense. He was a hell of a lot better than year 2 last year. He hasn't lived up to his draft spot yet though. I really believe if we had a better S to line up beside Byrd he'd be playing like he did in Buffalo. Not to mention an actual pass rush...dude is always a step late getting to the pass defense but he's being asked to cover 2 sides of the field most of the time which is silly.

Good move. 5.5 for a starting player capable of playing at KV's level is a good price. We need to put the talent around him so he can make the plays he was making as a rookie. I still think that tandem with Byrd could work if we could get back to pressuring the QB from more than 1 DL position.

With the lack of pass rush it really is difficult to judge the guys in coverage (unless you are constantly getting beat like Browner). They should be able to continue to beef up the D-line in the draft, so if they draft well again we should be able to see what KV can really do this year.

Maybe that LASIK just turned him into Ronnie Lott?
