How many here were not old enough to remember the 2003 1st Rd trade for Fried Chicken Sullivan?
Loomis/Payton may not be the ultimate drafting team but it is the best in Saints history. After the draft someone might want to dredge up some of that garbage.
If you only know the Payton era, just know how bad it was before complaining.

I wasn't old enough to witness/understand the full glory if the pick then.
But today, knowing what I know and being older I can get a sense of it.
Basically my Sullivan was Ellis(poor man's version of the pick tho)

When he was busted for pot in his small GA hometown, that was at a fried chicken joint too.

Fried Chicken Sullivan, traded a #17 & 18 to get him.
Fatass Grant- really had no prob until the 2nd contract. They paid him too much. Injuries came on and it looked like he was coasting
Lazyass Ellis- traded up to get, he friggin retired after collecting $30mil from the Saints
Renaldo Turnbull- not quite shame but journeyman for #14
Shawn Knight- #11 overall, 10 games gone, 3 seasons out of the NFL
Kevin Hardy- #7 overall, never played a snap, a bum
If Danny Shelton played for Georgia I'd be scared as shite!

If we're using the Sullivan debacle as a barometer to gauge the intelligence/ expertise of draft departments, there are very few organizations in the history of the league that would compete with that.
They made Al Davis look like a genius that year.

The sullivan pick may've been a bad choice, but the trade was well played. We got a great deal to move up that far, and it was agreed upon by all at the time. I remember hearing how Loomis kept the room calm as they were all freaking out after he hung up on Arizona's GM. He told them all that they would call back, just be patient. As time ticked away, everyone was on edge that it wouldn't happen and we were asking too much. Then the call came and the trade was agreed upon.
I always thought this is what defined Loomis: his negotiation skills. He isn't a talent evaluator nor does he pretend to be. Those faults lie with others. He does his job well though.
The other thing I remember is the total elation that we traded up to get Marcus Trufant and then the complete deflation when Sullivan was announced. I dropped my BBQ chicken leg and said in a soft, depressed tone at the TV "What the frick"

I'm not certain Payton and Loomis are the best. Bum Phillips had some really solid drafts. Quickly looking back on it, it appears Bum drafted better than the current regime.

I was 13. I remember watching it at a restaurant before a baseball tourney on the Northshore. I also remember that everyone wanted DeWayne Robertson, but that the Jets traded up in front of us and got him.
What I am hazy on remembering is whether or not we made the trade up to 6 before the Jets made their trade. For some reason I feel like they used to announce trades that happened before they got to picks on draft day back then. Could be totally wrong though. Just remember there being some drama over whether or not we would get Robertson.
Didn't really know who Sullivan was. His highlights looked good, but I also remember him looking soft as shite in the preseason games.
Player I really wanted that draft at the time was EJ Henderson the LB from Maryland.
ETA: (Didn't want Henderson at 6, was just hoping we took him in the draft. We passed on him in the second if memory serves)

I absolutely remember it. This is back when the first round was a fvcking MARATHON. It would take hours to get to the teens.
I remember jumping for joy when I saw what we got for the trade and then almost crying when I saw we'd picked Sullivan.

In the 5 years he got starts Turnbull made a probowl and had 42 sacks. His main problem was he wasn't Jackson or Swilling.

Old enough to remember Sullivan? I am old enough to remember the original 1st. round bust- Les Kelly. That alone is reason enough not to draft anymore Alabama players.

just checking cuz really, you really dunno the pain of decades of futility. I always want improvement but I know how fickle the fate of teams can be with regime changes. Just know how incredibly inept this front office was at one time. They hired an astronaut with no sports management experience to run the team. They gave a draft pick to the Cowboys for "draft advice". They started off trading the #1 overall for the equivalent of Chase Daniel.

i kind of remember being excited at some the Saints picks in 1997.
Jared Tomich was a good player out of Nebraska and Troy Davis had a ton of rushing yards in college.
i kind of knew who Keith Poole was. He was probably the top WR from Arizona St. That was a good team he played on with Jake Plummer at QB. They also had Pat Tillman on defense but I think they lost in the Rose Bowl to Ohio St?
anyway, I thought we had hit the jack pot that year. I was just a young idiot then.
The Ditka drafts were so bizarre. Naeole and Turley were good O-linemen that were picked in his era. Cam Cleeland was looking good but he had that hazing thing right? Andre Royal hit him with a sock full of quarters or some shite?

The Ricky Williams thing felt so weird too. I was so glad when we moved up to get him then I saw what we gave up to get him.
then Ditka gave some interview and the guy asked him what he was going to do the rest of the day? He hummed a tune and said Gone Golfing or something.

After googling more on it Naeole broke the blackboard throwing Rick Neuheisel through it because he was criticizing him at halftime of a game. Ditka was more retarded than originally thought.
