Hmmm... would think Pats would need to add a pick.

Dianna Russini? @diannaESPN

The New England Patriots are considering trading Malcolm Butler to the New Orleans Saints for Brandin Cooks per sources

Throw in that 32nd overall and we have a deal.

Shitty thread title that implies it's a done deal.

Butler is an RFA, so we'd have to work out a new contract for him. That was supposedly a big reason that we were considering moving Cooks. Butler would be a big get, but I think Cooks has more value considering that, even with a 2019 franchise tag, he's essentially on a 3yr/$24m type deal. Butler is going to be making $11m+.

Butler and their first seems like something Belichick would never agree to.

Yeah I doubt they would throw in a first along with Butler

No chance. It'd be like Butler and a 4th rounder or something.

Sure, but he's currently due an extension and on a 1st round tender

We'd need a lot more. Cooks is way more valuable

That is a fair trade honestly. No way there throwing a first with it. I'd be shocked especially since its the Pats FO.

Butler and a 2nd seems very fair to both teams IMO.

How is it a fair trade?

Saints would lose Cooks on a cheaper deal with a 5th year option for Malcolm Butler, who's a RFA and due a payday.

We'd be better off trading a pick to Denver or overpaying a FA

Converting Cooks into a good draft pick makes sense with the rookie contract structures.

Is he? Malcolm Butler is an elite corner, that's worth a good bit.
