One high-ranking AFC personnel executive believes the Saints should ask for a first-round pick and a mid-round pick for Payton since New Orleans doesn’t currently have a first-round pick in 2023. The Panthers need that first-round pick to acquire a quarterback, and it wouldn’t make sense for Payton to go to a team if it can’t acquire their quarterback of the future. The exec can’t imagine Payton wanting to deal with a rebuild.

quote:

Another league source we spoke to noted that there have not been any NFL head coaches traded in the last 15 years. The most recent example came in 2006 when Herm Edwards was traded from the New York Jets to the Kansas City Chiefs for a fourth-round pick.

Before that, Jon Gruden was traded from the then-Oakland Raiders to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for two first-round picks, two second-round picks and $8 million in 2002. In 2000, the Patriots acquired Bill Belichick, a fifth-round pick and a seventh-round pick in a trade with the Jets for first-, fourth and seventh-round picks.

So, the league source believed the conversation for Payton would start at two first-round picks. He believed the Saints could potentially be talked down to one first-round pick, but if he was traded in-division, New Orleans could try to seek three firsts.

The other teams mentioned are the traditional options: Chargers, Broncos, and Cowboys.

Well, you won't get that

It doesn't hurt to ask though.

1st and 5th in 2023, 2nd and 4th in 2024 seems to be relatively fair? Too much? Too little?

Second this, if they miss the playoffs it’s not due to lack of players. They would be more willing to give up picks.

About right for best case and teams in a bidding war. I also agree with the slight discount for CSP out of the nfc and highest price if he remains in Division which I just don't see.

So Loomis will ask for 1 3rd rounder, their last 7th round pick, give them 16 million and hop on the plane to blow Payton on the way

The problem with that is Sean could wait out the rest of his contract.

I dont believe its the same as players to where you have to play it out.

But does anyone actually know for sure how this works?

Bc there are like 5 NFL coaches worth a shite in the league and they don’t become available. That why people who think CSP won’t bring value got it fricked up

Don’t underestimate the fact that the 3 richest owners in the league could come calling. The personnel may not matter to CSP as much when he gets an extension to be the highest paid coach, a FO title, a piece of ownership etc.

Denver, Carolina, Dallas?

Denver has nothing to trade so I can't see that.

Carolina would have to give up so much that it would break them for years for the Saints to want to deal with them.

Dallas is probably doing too well to make a change at HC, much to Jerry Jones's dismay.

I see the Chargers for sure. I see the Bengals being interested but I cannot see Payton wanting to work for the Browns.

Teams interested would presumably be high in draft order. A top pick to get a QB would be reeeeeeeally nice

The chargers are the only correct answer. Sean's new wife would love to live in LA, young dynamic QB, talent all over the roster, etc.

He’s flirted with the organization in the past. I’d much rather work with Herbert who has his whole career in front of him as opposed to a rookie in carolina or Dak.

IMO. This is the floor.

2023 1st and 3rd
2024 2nd

but getting two 1st's should be firmly on the table.

Topper’s a maniac, that vacancy is prob the best one for the Saints outside of Dallas. And Dallas’ reg season success doesn’t mean dick. If they aren’t in the SB, McCarthy is on notice with Payton lingering out there.

Staley & Taylor were the darlings last year, idk if they cut bait this soon. But the city and QB would be ripe for CSP in SD. Obviously the talent is appealing in Cincy.

Anyway this is all good for us. People underestimate what a HC like CSP is worth. This is an unprecedented situation, and the value of an HC has never been more magnified. There just aren’t many good ones

The Saints are not trading Payton to a division rival period. Anyone thinking this is a possibility has no clue. I really hope he’s traded to an AFC team.
