NFL settles with former players! 765 MILLION

These owners NEVER wanted to go to court. No telling what they have said and done behind closed doors.
I feel bad for season tic holders around the league(except atlanta)
Salary cap implications. Apparel and TV deals are all looking to change.

Sadly I think they will now have one over riding rule: Make rules that make us more money!

As I understand it, the settlement was for past players/injuries. I don't see how it will prevent possible future lawsuits. But I'll defer to the legal eagles on this site on that issue.

That's actually pretty standard language in a lot settlements. If the NFL admitted liability it could possibly be used against them in future litigation.

(A) Baseline medical exams, the cost of which will be capped at $75 million;
(B) A separate fund of $675 million to compensate former players who have suffered cognitive injury or their families;
(C) A separate research and education fund of $10 million;
(D) The costs of notice to the members of the class, which will not exceed $4 million;
(E) $2 million, representing one-half of the compensation of the Settlement Administrator for a period of 20 years; and
(F) Legal fees and litigation expenses to the plaintiffs’ counsel, which amounts will be set by the District Court.
Love the last one.

With about 4,500 players, that's about $150k per player/family. That's pretty much chicken feed. The NFL got the better end of that deal.

and $675 mil is also chicken feed to the NFL, sadly. this wasn't a great settlement at all for the players.

Well, I guess they were looking actually having to prove that their particular injury came from football. Some are saying that this could have possibly taken years and they could have ended up with nothing. SO, I guess, both parties could say they win....or lose, depends on how you look at it.

Yeah I wonder if the NFL was threatening bankruptcy or protracted legal proceedings if the players didn't agree to this settlement.
Then again, the players are claiming cognitive disabilities, so maybe that had something to do with their decision.

Absolutely. I think the former players were facing a tough fight proving that their particular injuries/illnesses were conclusively caused by playing football. $765 million is nothing to sneeze at, but with the amount of plaintiffs involved, that doesn't amount to an astronomical amount per plaintiff. Probably a good settlement overall because I'm sure niether of the parties are extremely happy about it (except for the lawyers).

The real sad part in all of this is had the NFL just established some kind of veteran retirement deal a long time ago, they would've never gotten to this point, nor taken the PR hit.

This is indeed common language in most releases, however future litigants are not bound by the agreement.
So players who sue in the future can likely point to the settlement as an admission, unless otherwise barred by an evidentiary rule.
