My breakdown of tonight's game...

The Good:
Mike Thomas: Dude is going to be awesome. Looks like a clone of Colston (who was actually a slightly better athlete) but with better body control and maybe more aggressive going after the ball in tight coverage. Pairing Cooks with a 2007 or 2008 Colston + a 2008-2009 Moore caliber player (Snead, who also looked good) = the best Saints WR corps in the Brees era. Props to the Saints for quickly turning what was looking like a shady group in late 2013/2014 into what should be a top 10 unit.
Edebali: The position I'm most worried about on defense is the weakside/RDE. He came up with 2 sacks. He schooled Nate Solder, who is pretty legit. Richardson made got some pressure from the LDE position as well. I was expecting bottom 5 in the league type production from this position. I'm not going to change that drastically based on preseason action, but if we get a bit below average (a combined 7-9 sacks, decent number of pressures) production from our RDE, then I think we'll be in that 12-16 range as a unit. I REALLY like the rest of our DL. I like our safeties and love Breaux. Given Lewis's health issues, I think that the rest of our CBs are too green to put a lot of faith in the position, but it still has a lot of potential and I'm not worried about it. I still think our DL is frickED if Cam goes down, but they did very well without him.
Tony Hillis: No one is going to talk about him, but I saw him do a great job getting to the outside on run plays and make some key block. Didn't see him give anything up on passing plays.
Tommy Lee Curtis: Yeah, I know that's not his real name. But if he didn't want me calling him that, he shouldn't have taken a name so similar to the United States's favorite hermaphrodite. Guy has speed and showed some nice hands. Could be a Cole Beasley type player, but blacker.
CB's: No one in particular. Pats WRs had 82 receiving yards. One of the bigger gains came against Brian Dixon, who should never see the field on defense (if he makes the team). Mitchell started having success against us, but we broke his fricking arm. Well done.
Lasco: Super efficient on offense. Nice tackle on special teams. Needs to make the team, and needs to get more playing time.
The Bad:
Peat: First of all, the Saints fricked up by drafting an OT when we were already set at that position. I don't think that playing him at every position but center is helping with his development. The dude is a RT (a position that you shouldn't draft in the first round). Strief is getting old. Cut your losses with Peat as an OG and start playing him exclusively at RT.
McCown: Don't really care since we're buggered if Brees goes down. But after a really good start, he had some awful passes down the field.
The Ugly:
Tim Hightower: Looked SLOW AS frick. Pretty sure he had a drop as well. I think that he could be a surprise early cut if Lasco plays well next game. Not because he's one of the worst players on the team, but because he's a vet that worked his arse off getting back into the NFL. Payton will respect him, and try to give him the best opportunity to catch on elsewhere, and that doesn't happen cutting him after the 4th preseason game.
Joel Meyers: You're a god amongst men, but come the frick on. Packers fans never yelled out "KEEEEEWWWWEEEENNN!!!"
Sean Payton: Herm Edwards's comments weren't absolute. You don't always play to win the game. If you want to figure out whether it's worth going for 2 every time, you have to do it with all of your starters vs. another team's starters. Grayson vs. a mix of Pats starters and backups means nothing. You have a kicker battle going on. Kick PATs every time.
Onyemata: Did nothing of note and had one bad play. Not a big deal that he wasn't a stud since six months ago he was chasing tigers for food, but we seem to have 2 seemingly legit starting caliber DTs (Rankins/Fairley), a competent rotational guy in Davison, and another OK 4th rotational guy in Jenkins. Will be tough keeping a 5th DT as a project.
The three things I MOST wanted to see tonight, in order, were:
1) Edebali play well (BRINGO)
2) Thomas play well (BRINGO)
3) Onyemata play well (narp)
The dude is a physical FREAK. He won't make it to our practice squad. We may need him to "get hurt" and be put on the IR, getting a better chance next season when Fairley and Jenkins are FAs. Sucks that he wouldn't be able to practice and develop. It's underrated important that he proves that he's worthy of making the team.

For the most part I agree. Although I think Davison is gonna be more than just ok. He looked good in limited time and has shown a lot of improvement from last year in camp. Onyemata, I still think he will be more of a DE than DT. I don't expect much this year. Hopefully next year turns into more of a run stuff DE.

Forgot about that. Payton said that they have long term plans for him at DE, so that help his chances out. My worry is that he could end up being the DL version of Peat (though with a much lower cost). Would prefer they stick him at one position, at least for a year or two.

Anyone think Spiller showed some real burst on that run that got called back?
Posted on 8/11/16 at 11:14 pm to breauxmosexual
No doubt. That run was all I needed to see of him to know that he shouldn't be "on the bubble."

This offense could really be special

I'd like to add nick Farley looked great and was very disruptive.

Agree. I know he's had a good camp so far but he looked outmatched all night.. disgusting.
its still early though so its all good.
the run defense was trash again. Biggest pet peeve for me to watch so yeah, I'm gonna say something every time about it if I see or vice versa. Any improvement in that area and I'd be thrilled.
Mike Thomas looks like he'll be a damn fine WR on this team. Can't wait to see Brees and him connect on some sick plays this year..

The 1s and 2s gave up a total of 48 yards rushing in the first half. Half of those came on 1 carry by Brandon Bolden in 2 min. There were a number of -1 and -2 yard runs by the Pats in the first half. I do not look at the 3rd string LBs and DTs and think that any of those guys will be anywhere near the final 53. I will take the rushing totals given up with a grain of salt.

Perhaps the best thing about both plays was that Grayson got the ball out in 1.65 and 1.67 seconds, respectively. Thomas said he was pressed on both plays and was able to win quickly off the line,

True.
after awhile I would miss a few plays here and there and not notice right of way that a few new guys were in the game.

Better then that sorry excuse for a route by Coleman on Grayson's pick six. That break looked lazy.

I thought he should play LG, RT may be the only position to justify playing him. All of your assessment gets a perfect 10.

Again, I didn't see Coleman in the game after the pick-6. Twittered Underhill asking him if he made it back in. He probably has the resources to check.

Dislocated elbow, 4 weeks and he will be back.
Your drafted WR looks fantastic.

I still like Coleman (who wasn't really a fit for us) and Doctson (will be the best WR in the class) more, but I like Thomas 3rd in the draft. Everyone on this forum was blowing Treadwell at draft time and I have no doubt that Thomas will be better.
