PFT

quote:

The Falcons did the impossible, losing Super Bowl LI despite having the trophy all but in their possession. With 2:06 remaining in the third quarter, holding a 28-9 lead, Atlanta had a 98.9 percent chance to beat the Patriots, according to ESPN.

Of course, as everyone knows, it didn’t turn out in the Falcons’ favor. That, quarterback Matt Ryan admits, has proved hard to get over.

“It takes a little bit of time; there’s no question about that,” Ryan told SiriusXM’s Bruce Murray and Phil Savage. “I think that the further you go and don’t end up winning that, the tougher it is. But at the same time, for me it was one of those things that you think about it, you try and assess what you could have done better, what you would do differently moving forward.

“And then, ultimately, you’ve got to move on.”

The Falcons have insisted all offseason there will be no Super Bowl hangover. The 10 Super Bowl losers before the Falcons combined to go 102-58 the following season.

Atlanta plans to use the sting of the Super Bowl loss as motivation for 2017.

“I felt like I took a couple weeks to get away from it and spend time just relaxing and kind of disappearing for a bit,” Ryan said. “But when I got back, and we started to work on this 2017 season and the team that we have now, all of my focus goes there. I think you’ll always have a little bit of that scar that kind of drives you, and that’s fine. Never let go of that. But our focus is 100 percent about what we’re doing and what we’re moving forward to.”

It was the greatest collapse in sports history. There’s no coming back from that.

He should talk to Russell Wilson, maybe enroll in his “It Gets Better…sort of” program

It took Seattle barfing away a late season home game against the Cardinals……for ATL to even have home field to get to the point where they threw up a Lombardi Trophy. Good luck getting back to that opportunity.

As a Bills fan living in Buffalo, I can tell you that a loss like that leaves a scar, and the scar doesn’t drive you, its a gremlin that forever whispers in your ear. It will be years before Atlanta recovers from that humiliation.

Dunno. We're pretty fricking loaded and young on D.
Guess we'll find out but I like our playoff chances.

They aren't recovering from this anytime soon, IMO.

The only thing worse than a Super Bowl hangover is a "25-point blown lead in the Super Bowl" hangover.

Right answer but he's gonna have to prove it on the field and actually accomplish it, Matt's had a pretty consistent regular season career but that has not been reflected by great playoff success except for 2016. The fact is, when you qualify for the playoffs like Matt and the Falcons have, those postseason stats and, for QBs primarily, wins do matter and he wasn't at his best when he had to be his best. Drew Brees has proven capable of that, Peyton Manning has proven capable of that, Aaron Rodgers has proven capable of that, Tom Brady has OBVIOUSLY proven capable of that and even Russell Wilson but Matty Ice needs to overcome that or he'll be another Dan Marino.

They didnt just lose the SB. They gave a 25pt margin late in the second half. They wont recover from that. They have been fortunate the last few years in that they havent had much if any injury along the OLine. They had the best Average Points For in the league with 34.1. The year before they had 21.2. This is what you call an anomaly because they have never seen anything close to 30 points with Ryan at the helm. Now they lost their OC and people still think this offense will decimate teams? No chance.

Their TO ratio was +11, good for 4th in the league. Vic Beasley led the league in sacks with 15.5. Again, people are supposed to believe these numbers are achievable again the following year? What goes up must come down. They seem to have improved the defense on paper with the Rookie & FA signings but the game isnt played on paper.

One winning record in the last 4 years puts them no better than the Saints. The Saints at least put up a great offense year in and year out. I think this Atlanta team will collapse during the season just like they did in the SB.

I mean, I don't expect him to say anything else but I don't blame any of the free agents who chose to leave Atlanta this off-season. I hate the Falcons as much as any Saints fan but not even I could have come up with a loss that hard, that cruel. We'll see what they do, only thing they can do is move on but man would I be burying my head in the sand if I was a Falcons player/fan until the season rolled around.

Who cares. Stupid story.

Their fans on Twitter are dumb AF. Honestly some of the dumbest sports fans you'll ever talk to. Really ignorant about reality.

Well, that's your opinion. I'm sure you said the same thing during our final 8 week decimation of the league and our SB run. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, we'll find out soon enough which one of us is correct?
Will the Falcons make it back to the SB? Odds are against it, just by simple mathematics. Will ATL make the playoffs? I believe odds are in our favor just by looking at the team on paper vs. the rest of the NFC South.

God speed.

No the tears were because he saw the saints Lombardi and remembered falcons didn't have one.

Living off of 2009 doesn't do much for me anymore. Y'all sound like old school Alabama fans pre-saban.

"Well, we got that trophy from 1992 tho!"

ETA: And you know deep down it's not quenching that hunger for another one cause you know it has been a long time now. I live in NOLA, I hear the grumblings. Don't lie to yourself and me.
Ok, I'll go back to my hole now. Just wanted to spark up some heat on this board. Football season is drawing near.

Your QB shot an entire Gatorade ad with the tag line "failure is your fuel".

Good luck.

Not having Shanahan back will help the Saints immensely.

His play calling was 3 steps ahead of the Saints defense and ran circles around them.
