I wish. Its been so long since we've had a difference maker who could truly disrupt a play. But I don't see him leaving Houston and even if he does, theres other teams that can and will throw boat loads more money at him.

OK? And how are we going to go from 0 first round picks to two? Because I guarantee you that he gets franchised.

Remember when people laughed at Texas for taking him over Reggie?

I didn't. I wanted Ferguson and Mangold instead.

tks thrill

My big name choice is Robert Mathis. Likely done in Indy.

Will Smith is scheduled to make $7mil. I think you could get Mathis for that same amount or less depending on the total package.

Mathis sacks by year-
3.5
10.5
11.5
9.5
7
11.5
9.5
11
9.5

Would certainly prefer Mathis to Smith.

Cliff Avril is my younger guy choice (25) but he'll be Detroit's re-sign focus and likely tagged before letting walk as well.

Mathis has always been solid....but I wonder how much playing opposite Freeney affected his ability as a playmaker

No thanks to Mathis.

How old is he?

How is he against the run?

How is he without Freeney at the other end?

definitely a consideration, in PayLoom I trust. I think the dirty birds dealt with that very thing getting Ray Edwards after he played opposite of Jared Allen. Mathis does have a longer resume of success. Just matched up for the same cost Mathis looks like more of what is needed than Smith at this point tho.

Mathis posted his lowest sack totals since his rookie year when Freeney only played 9 games in 2007, so there's that

But I don't see him leaving Houston
Houston has got good production out of younger cheaper players this year. I would be willing to guess that Mario won't take the Texans first offer as they will come in lower than he expects (given his fit in new 3-4 scheme). If the Saints stay in a 4-3 he would be nice, but he has had injury issues the last couple of years here in Houston.

9.5 as a low point looks awfully good right about now

7.0 Mathis stats

Also, it appears it was his fewest tackles since rookie year as well

He absolutely gets franchised, even if just to be traded for the highest offer (since the new team would need to give him a frickload of money, I'd say they get at LEAST a 1 and a 3.

And he very rarely plays RDE (I think he did in the SB when Freeney went out, but he had a shitty game). Not sure how he'll handle going against LTs more adept at protecting the QB, though I think he'd be great against the run there. He'll also be looking for a 4 or 5 year deal and leave you taking a cap hit in 3 or so years when he slows down, or a 35 year old DE at the end of his deal.

Avril may be a beast, but he may be another Ray Edwards type benefiting from a very talented trio by his side (though Suh wasn't great for much of the season, so I'm leaning towards the former). They may not want to spend more money on the DL, but I have to imagine that they would at least franchise and trade him if they don't want to sign him longterm.

I don't really like any of the other DEs available more than Will Smith (Abraham would be lateral and a worse contract). I'm excited about Romeus and liked what Junior and especially Jordan were doing later in the season. I don't think we're going to see much difference at the DE position next season.
