NBC Sports

quote:

The Saints have parted ways with cornerback Keenan Lewis, who believes that a long-standing icy relationship with defensive coordinator Dennis Allen is the reason why he’s been dropped from the roster.

In an interview with Josina Anderson of ESPN, Lewis said he has never been one of Allen’s guys and that the root of the issue came before Lewis was even in the NFL.

“I worked out for the Saints,” Lewis said. “He was a defensive backs coach. He told me face-to-face that I wasn’t going to make it. So I always used that as my motivation every time I see him. Like nobody ever told me that I would never have a chance. … So then he comes back, and my only message to him was, ‘man look, seven years later, I’m still standing. I’m standing strong. I’m playing at the highest level. I’m starting and I’m competing at the top of the level. So, anything is possible.’ He took it the wrong way. I think he took it as me being arrogant. I’m just [telling him] never doubt a man on what God has planned for them … Anybody can accomplish anything if you give them a try. Never doubt a man before giving him a try. I don’t know if he took that the wrong way.”

Lewis said the relationship with Allen was the “only thing I can see that made them pull the trigger.” Saints coach Sean Payton pointed in another direction, however.

Payton said Saturday, via the New Orleans Times-Picayune, that word of an issue between Lewis and Allen was news to him and that Lewis’ injuries were the reason the team moved on. Lewis missed 10 games last season and has practiced once this summer while dealing with an adductor injury, leaving Payton to say “it seems like a long time” since they’ve been able to count on the corner.

Lewis says he wanted to be 100 percent before returning to the field and believes he will be in two weeks, at which point he’ll try to “show [the Saints] that they made a mistake” by releasing him.

Probably part of the reason they released him but not the full. His injury is likely chronic and will linger for years so I don't think they saw much value in him. Another contributing factor is they probably like their young CBs. I highly doubt Allen disliking him is the only reason they cut him. More like many factors.

Payton response:

quote:

Payton was asked if he saw tension between Lewis/Allen, said, “We didn’t have a chance to. He wasn’t on the field.”

Fire Allen, fire Payton, cut Peat, cut Coleman, trade Brees and start from scratch.

This bullshite of tanking for the #1 pick won't cut it in the NFL.

I wouldn't doubt that the chemistry didn't work with Allen and him. In the presser however, Payton clearly alluded to "52 weeks after surgery and we still couldn't get him on the field" as related to the injury

He said/she said, but who cares?

Bottom line another FA bust that takes up a lot of cap room unless he bounces back and even then hurts some.

Two big FA moves at CB; Browner and Lewis and neither worked out.

Lewis was arguably the best player on defense before last season. I don't see how you could call him a bust.

I wouldn't be shocked if he resigns with Pitt and balls out

Lewis signees five year 26+ million dollar deal.

He had a very good first year, got hurt, and didn't show up in year three and is cut.

I call it a bust, maybe you do not; but he was counted on last year, thus year and next year. Now we have a hole and hopes.

A hole at CB and hopes an unproven guy can step up.

Get your head out of Payton's butt and you might find out what's going on.

Teams have a limited amount of "capital" to depend on players. If you commit a substantial amount on a player he needs to play and play at a high level.

Lewis is a bust because for the capital allocated, we didn't get enough in return.

It's not that hard, pay attention to what is going on.
