Perhaps this trade was going to involve Butler but his tender has yet been signed. The Pats and Saints have a very good working relationship. What I think happened is the Saints pushed this tonight to avoid paying Cooks his bonus. I think we end up giving the Pats their 3rd back for Butler after he signs his tender and the whole deal ends up looking like Cooks and our 4th for Butler and the 32nd pick. It's not some conspiracy, I just think this is how it plays out.

Would be the only thing that salvages this. But, why would the Pats do it now? They literally don't have to do anything and win the trade bigly already.

If it works that way I'd be happy. I don't think Butler is a great player, but he's a quality starter at a position where we need another quality starter.

Pretty sure he was rated the 2nd best CB in the league last year by PFF.

By thought of, do you mean plagiarized NFL.com?

Only way I could see it is if they were in agreement beforehand.

It saved the Saints 700K in a bonus due to Cooks tomorrow.

That $700k is not much savings as compared to how one-sided this trade presently stacks up. No way there's a back side deal to this. It would be voidable under NFLPA rules. This was just the Saints unloading Cooks. Bad, bad deal.

The Patriots can get a 3rd round comp pick for Butler if they let him walk, so why would they trade him now instead of getting a year of production out of him and then getting the same value?

If they trade Butler it would be for atleast a 2nd round pick

$700k is peanuts in the NFL. And it marginally raises his trade value if we pay it.

Mike Reiss ? @MikeReiss Butler couldn't be part of tonight's trade. As a restricted free agent, he isn't under contract. Only players under contract can be traded. LINK … 7:16 PM - 10 Mar 2017
