invalidates the promise he made to pay back for his education?.

What's wrong with him deferring? How is it that everyone with this sizzling hot take acts like he's not going to have to serve in any capacity? He had to get permission from someone more important than anyone on this board to do so, so who gives a frick even if he doesn't end up having to serve?

He’s not skipping out on his commitment. The form of what his commitment is may have changed, and it may not be the traditional serve five years straight right out of the Academy, but that doesn’t mean he’s not serving his commitment.

I’m not sure if this is still the case, but the Air Force used to have a clause for elite athletes to serve in the AF Reserve, if it was deemed it would bring credit upon to the service and raise the Air Force’s profile. The intent was to allow the secretaries of the services the option to waive or alter a service commitment of an athlete if thier pursuit of a professional athletic career would bring credit to the service. Of course, this is also way to attract better athletes to the service academies. If they demonstrate the talent to play professional sports but cannot go pro, you’re really not gonna get anybody to play for a service academy. I know there are a couple pitchers, including at least one in the MLB, who followed this model and are serving in the Air Force Reserve.

They are still honoring their commitment, it’s just the conditions of their commitment have changed.

I have no problem with anyone deferring. If that avenue is available to him he should take advantage of it. If he has to server later, or never, is not the issue. The issue is the poster effectively said "frick you" to the idea that the kid got the education and doesn't seem it to be a big deal that he not fulfill his commitment. At least that is the way I interpreted the finger. If that was not his intent I apologize in advance.

Taxpayer paid education, then duck your service commitment ? Sounds about right for this day and age.

You are showing your ignorance about the military. In today's military which is largely reservists. In this guys case having a deferred status if he makes the Saints roster he will serve his active duty during the off season and will do PR work for the Air Force through out the year. It is a win win for all involved, Saints, NFL and Air Force. In the case that conflict breaks out or he is needed he will be immediately put back on active duty. It will not hurt the Saints their are roster and salary exemptions in place for military members. Samething took place for David Robinson back in the 80's. Chad Hennings a DE from the Air Force played for the Cowboys back in the 90's under the same situation.
