I moved here for the same reason you did. And every city you just named has a higher cost of living. Im from Nola... love the food, was raised there, amazing culture, but you have to choose Houston to live over Nola. There is a reason why people are not MOVING to Nola.. they VISIT for Mardi Gras, Essence, concerts, etc., but they not MOVING there. Why? Because the system there sucks. 30,000 people move to Houston every 2 months; which is why the population is so high. It is a growing city what lots of money and potential. Nola has been Nola for years and it hasnt changed for the better in decades.

Houston is very affordable, but it is affordable because it has no geographical limitations. One of my big dislikes for it is that it is so spread out.

You don't know what you're talking about. Nola is booming

I'm sure he's the first person ever to live in the suburbs of a major city

Yeah. Booming during certain times... Essence, Super Bowls, etc. Other than that, not at all. When was the last time you heard someone say they moved to Nola for career possibilities? I never did. As far as Houston being spread out, yeah it is. But most people stay in there area. Tomball people live in Tomball and shop around Tomball. Pasadena people live and shop around Pasadena. Its up to the individual where they want to live, work, and shop. I WOULD agree with you if you said you lived in a certain town and you have to drive to the next time to shop or pick up your kid from school. But there is everything in every specific area where you are. If you live in Spring, you dont have to drive to the southwest side to go to Best Buy etc.

Who are we to tell a man where he should live? Maybe he liked the area.

Nola has been near the top in young professional growth for several years now

The real estate market there is unreal right now, similar to what was happening in the woodlands before the oil bust

This is from before the hospital jobs that have opened up and will continue to do so:

one of many articles on it

quote:

This includes New Orleans, which ties for first place on our list with San Antonio. The New Orleans metro area’s population of college graduates grew by 44,000 from 2007 to 2012, a 25% increase, double the national average of 12.2%. (The percentage of college grads in the U.S. stood at 19.4% in 2012, up from 18% in 2007.)

Nola's growth is pretty amazing actually. To say it hasn't changed is laughable.

It might be. But not compared to Houston at all. Everything you find in Nola can be found in Houston but with a bigger market. Bigger market means you can make more money because you have more customers. Real Estate is a great career, but it can be found anywhere in any city. Also, New Orleans is also built for people with money. If you making less than $30,000 a year, you wont make it. Rent alone wont be no less than $800. Everyone cant afford that. This is why most people in Nola is living with other people. Here is Houston, you can get an apartment for $550. It wont be the best apartment, but its still an option.

Not exactly the young professional crowd that drives growth

Where? I bet you can find a cheaply priced place within the same distance from downtown

And no one is saying Nola has the same job market. I'm disputing what you stated, because as the stats show, it was clearly wrong

The young professionals are moving the hell out of there; which means less money for the economy. For example, I have a masters in business administration. Why would I stay in Nola? They wont pay me what Im asking for, which is no less than 60k a year. You can find a apartment for $550 around Westheimer not far from the Galleria. Or you can move to Greenpoint and pay the same thing. Again, not the best apartments and they may be older, but at least its an option. Those same apartments in Nola will run for at least $800. I wouldn't pay 2k for no apartment at all; in no city. You cant rent a house out here for $1000/a month. Check them out on HAR.com.

I just posted stats that said the opposite.

Not only that, it said nola led the nation in young professional job growth

That was before the opening of the $1 billion hospital too

Hmmm:

I don't believe you...

And we own a place that we rent out. We pay for flexibility, convenience, and the ability to move at will

I know about the new hospital. But again, thats for people who work in the medical field. There are other careers than the medical field that exists that Nola dont cater to. The hospital DO create jobs, but only for certain people.

Dude, When I first moved to Houston, I was living in Greenspoint. My rent was $540. I renewed my lease and it went to $560. This was in 2013. I have no reason to lie. What would I be getting out of it. LINK

Paste the link in your search bar. This is what type of house you can rent for for 2,000 a month.

I was commenting on your repeatedly terrible grammar

You're posting links for places far away from the center of the city. Hell, most aren't even in Houston

We can walk to work

Thats great. But everyone cant walk to work. You supposed to cater to everyone in the city; not just a few individuals. Everyone dont want to live in the city; some do, some dont. But there is affordable housing around the city for ANY budget.

Look, you posted that young professionals are fleeing Nola when they've experienced the nation's largest % growth in that area

quote:

veryone dont want to live in the city; some do, some dont. But there is affordable housing around the city for ANY budget.

Well that is the new trend for young professionals. The traditional suburban lifestyle is falling out of favor

And people in Nola could live in Jefferson parish or even Laplace for just as cheap with a quicker commute

You're bringing up places 1+ hour away

You're missing the point: Houston is too spread out. You can have an hour plus commute while living inside the city limits because the city limits are enormous

I agree. The commute is hell. But I'll rather take no state taxes, no taxes while grocery shopping, cheaper and affordable housing any day compared to over priced housing, a higher murder rate, and the city not paying you what you deserve despite what degree you have. Yes it is a big city. But thats why the beltway and the toll road was invented. You can get there quicker. Also you have all the freedom in the world to leave home early. For example, I was living in NW Houston and I was driving all the way to Hobby everyday at 1 time. I left out earlier than usual. There is no way if I left out at normal time I would make it there on time.
