People freaking out about them trading picks. They still ended up with the same number of players if they had done nothing

Fortunately I am versed in Common Core mathematics.

9 picks last year = averages out to 10

5 picks this year averages out to 10.

Total number of draft picks in the past two years = 20.

Well, there is the hope that the 2 injured corners (Swann, Williams) come back and pan out. They looked promising, or at least physically better than Browner. If they were just raw, that should be better now.

Weren't they both ahead of Breaux early on?

CB Chris Culliver just got cut by Washington...hurt last year but solid in SF before that. Just 27 years old.

now imagined had we manufactured more picks in this draft.

mind blown.

like i said in another thread this morning, it is a systematic problem by our franchise over a 10 year period, which has proven to fail time and time again. Our lack of draft picks, and draft pick success has put us in a bad cap situation, and more importantly, a lack of talent and depth.

Which comes full circle, because that is exactly the reason we had extra picks in 2015.

Our 2 top pass catchers, and mid round steals, Jimmy Graham and Kenny Stills= TRADED

Ben Grubbs, dont know how he graded last year, I think he got hurt, but i cant imagine it was worse than our Guard plays.

I usually don't agree with Lester, but even Mickey admitted the other day in his presser that he loves to trade up. In fact, he said he'd rather trade up to get a guy than trade back. So that explains the past of the Saints rarely ever trading back. Mickey just doesn't really believe in it.

and when has trading up really paid off for us?

We have the least amount of picks of any NFL team over the last 10 years, 5 years, and we have little to show for it.

quote:

2007: Round 4: traded 123rd and 163rd overall picks for 107th overall pick (Antonio Pittman)

2008: Round 1: traded 10th and 78th overall picks for 7th overall pick (Sedrick Ellis) and 164th overall pick (Carl Nicks)

2008: Round 5: traded 146th and 218th overall picks for 144th overall pick (DeMario Pressley)

2008: Round 7: traded 187th overall pick in 2009 for 237th overall pick (Adrian Arrington)

2009: Round 5: traded 222nd overall pick and 163rd overall pick in 2010 for 164th overall pick (Thomas Morstead)

2010: Round 4: 130th and 201st overall picks for 123rd overall pick (Al Woods)

2010: Round 5: traded 121st overall pick in 2011 for 158th overall pick (Matt Tennant)

2011: Round 1: traded 56th overall pick and 27th overall pick in 2012 for 28th overall pick (Mark Ingram)

2013: Round 3: traded 106th and 109th overall picks for 82nd overall pick (John Jenkins)

2014: Round 1: traded 27th and 91st overall picks for 20th overall pick (Brandin Cooks)

Even our solid starters in Cooks and Ingram, it hasnt been worth it.

There's no doubt that trading up and ending up with fewer picks every year isn't a good philosophy. Especially when they don't hit on a high percentage of the guys that they move up for.

I'm with you man. I think this year's draft will really pay off for us. But we really need to focus more so on building through the draft. These high priced FAs have come back to bite us more often than they have actually worked out. Hopefully last year's draft and this year's are the start of trend towards a "home bread" approach

They were only ahead of Breaux because of them being draft picks and he came in as a CFL free agent. He probably would've jumped them both based on his performance this past season.

your breakdown got me wondering what the result of all those picks were. I know we can't assume that the Saints would have picked the same players had we stayed put, but it is an interesting comparison. here's the results (* denotes Pro Bowl player):

Saints trade:
Fred Bennet CB
Brandon Frye OT
Jerod Mayo* LB
Shawn Crable LB
Jerome Felton* FB
Caleb Campbell S
Brandon Underwood CB
Pat McAfee* P
O'Brien Schofield DE
Reshad Jones* S
Jorrick Calvin CB
Shane Vereen RB
Chris Prosinski S
Kevin Zeitler OG
Dion Sims TE
David Bakhtiari OT
Deone Bucannon S
John Brown WR

and receive:
Antonio Pittman RB
Sedrick Ellis DT
Carl Nicks* OG
DeMario Pressley DT
Adrian Arrington WR
Thomas Morstead* P
Al Woods DT
Matt Tennant C
Mark Ingram* RB
John Jenkins DT
Brandin Cooks WR

ETA: missed the last two picks traded away
