Schefter just reported that the 2 sides are still as far apart on the deal as they have been for the past few months, and that no progress has been made.
With Vilma gone and that cap space available then who knows, maybe the Saints dish it out to Brees to cover the remaining gap between the two sides. But we did hear reports that the Saints are trying to bring in another Defensive Free Agent.

Vilma and Smith already took paycuts. The suspensions won't really provide a significant amount of money.
