How close is close?

After watching my beloved Saints blow close games week after week, a question began burning in my mind. What is the single season record for one score losses? We have to be pretty darn close. For the purposes of this exercise I threw out the Monday Night Dirty Bird debacle, so that puts us at 5 for the season with a point differential of less than or equal to -6. Alas, with some help from the internetz (Pro Football Reference) I got the answer. Seven teams share the record of 8 (since 1940). Last to do it you ask? Last years version of the G-Men. Please sweet baby jesus let's get this turned around...all I want for Christmas is 10-6

Hope you get your Christmas wish. Unfortunately you probably have a better chance of Santa being real than the Saints finishing 10-6.
