I don't understand how hecwas impressive enough to basically just Waltz into an NFL punting job. There have to be dozens of guys who are better at the job than he is, but he's just handed the position after one tryout.

Tuesday is the off day for teams playing Sunday and traditionally the day that teams will bring in FAs for try-outs. There is no report that the Saints brought anyone in for try-outs yesterday. Odds are overwhelming that barring an injury in practice, the same punter and kicker will play this Sunday.

Payton would at least bring in a punter or kicker in for a tryout to scare the current player.

This is quite the conclusion. I’m not saying it’s wrong but it’s also possible that he’s not an idiot and can see who is hurting the team. Players hurting the team will obviously be benched or cut.

Underhill has gone in dry on Pete and he hasn’t been demoted or fired. That kinda disproves your theory a bit.

The funniest part about the Underhill freakout is they got mad that he said Penning was playing like shite and might get benched, Penning got benched, Penning ended up playing anyway and proceeded to play like shite. So Underhill was right on both counts, which is exactly what his job as writer/reporter is for, but they're still mad about it.
