Fans need to lobby the NFL to change holding from 10 to 5 yards.

Holding is the #1 game fixing penalty. It's a 10 yard penalty for a reason. It kills drives. Every other line infraction (that isn't a PF) is a 5 yard penalty.

Sure, teams overcome it sometimes, but the vast majority of times, it either forces a punt or FG attempt. It is the most commonly used game fixing penalty there is, and as everyone knows, it can be called on any play.

And that's how they get you. They allow penalties on every play, in the spirit of "letting them play" and thus, they are able to pick and choose when to make calls. Holding is the most common.

I know it wouldn't have changed the outcome in the Saints game, but reducing the holding penalty from 10 to a 5 yards would seriously hamper officials ability to kill drives.

This actually has merit.

It will never fly.

I agree no way holding should be 10 yards. I don't think most people would dispute that and people have called for that to be changed for a long time.

While they are at it, make PI a flat 15 yards, not a spot foul.

While I agree with this, it would just further the rules to benefit offense opposed to defense. They need to look at penalties that are 5 yards but result in an automatic first down as well.

You got any money? They won't listen to you unless they have something to lose...like money.

It's 10 yards for a reason. Duh the NFL isn't going to lose leverage to benefit the team they don't want to win

Disagree. Pass interference should be 10 yards and an automatic first, though. That spot foul shite needs to go away.
Also, simple math should come into play. Offsetting penalties should be equal in yardage.

20 yards or half the distance...whichever is more. I like the pros being held to a higher standard (even if the refs don't actually call it sometimes).

And...

5 yards for holding

And...

If you fumble the ball into the endzone and it goes out of bounds, you dont't lose possesion, it just becomes 1st and goal from the 20.

And..

Field goals =2 points and the "two point conversion" becomes the "three point conversion" (from the 3 yard line)...frick kickers.

I have a different solution:

Add 2 or 3 more refs to the field with the sole charge of watching the lines and calling holding.

We all know that holds happen every play, and that is because there is usually way too much going on to catch it every time it happens. The result is that the holding call has become a ridiculous drive killing random act-of-god that you never know when it's going to show up and frick you in the arse.

Instead, I would rather that holding become rigorously enforced so that when it does occur, it's caught. A week or two of that and you'd see much cleaner play on the lines. I know for damn sure Cam Jordan would have had 6+ sacks last night if they were actually looking at the headlocks he was constantly in.

I don't think that would be the result. It would still be a penalty. It just wouldn't be a drive killing penalty.

There's no way to fix no-calls, except to discipline the guilty refs if it's deemed egregious. And there's no way to eliminate corruption. However, I think this would clip their nuts a bit and hinder their ability to screw teams over.

You make great points and I agree that 10 yards is a bit overkill most of the time. It should be penalty enough that you get a big gain called back and move backwards instead. There's a reason that you need 10 yards for a 1st down: because it's challenging to go 10 yards consistently. Adding another 10, as you said, is almost always a drive killer for an offense that's no worse than a false start or delay of game

Fans need to turn the NFL off and watch something "real" like Survivor or WWE!

A 10 yard penalty is too big a penalty for an action that everyone recognizes could potentially be called on every play.

If you really think the games are being “fixed” then why do we watch?
