However, no way does he try that throw off his back foot, across his body with guys in his face. The Tony throw was the right choice under those exact circumstances.

ETA: Kudos to the defense for playing it right.

By that point, yes. But if he had looked at the whole field instead of fixing on one guy, the Saints would have lost.

Even afterward, if he doesn't panic against a 3 man rush and gets a decent throw off to TG, it's probably a completion and Falcons win

Love how they highlighted Harper chasing down Julio then the loose ball.

Harper had a very strong game in Week 1. I hope that Ryan's scheme will help him this season. He is a GREAT locker room guy and has been a model Saint since being drafted.

Would love for some of the highlight reels on NFLN be of great defensive plays by Harper this season; instead of him being toast or blowing coverages.

He did. Look at the article posted in another thread (Buccs vs Saints D, I think). He looked left where Douglas and Jones were. They were both doubled and the Saints basically "jumbled" that area of the field. The pressure didn't allow Ryan to wait until Douglas came free so he was forced to throw to Tony. Had there been no pressure, he could have waited for Douglas, or Tony to come free (I think he would have) and it would be game over. The 3 man pressure won the game.

I don't think he paniced though. even off his back foot the ball to tony g was an accurate throw. From the instant the ball was snapped he locked onto douglas. Seemed like a designed play

Watch it again. Ryan is fixed on Tony G. He follows TG all the way to the center of the end zone

I was right there. Watch it again, I just did, he looks douglas' way instantly. then comes to tony g.

It was a bit too high but more importantly it was weak. A bit more zip and it gets there before Vaccarro.

I watched it ten times, Ryan never changes the angle of his head and follows TG all the way.

He couldn't throw any earlier because Tony hadn't made his cut yet. If he throws too hard, it goes into the back of the endzone. He floated it because he had pressure and he needed time for Tony to get there. It was a good decision based upon the sequence of events and the general suckage of his OLine.

both eyes and head looking at douglas...It seemed like that play took an hour

I was in the box, dead center of that endzone, I only watched ryan, he looked left, I looked to see who he was targeting, douglas blanketed. I looked back at ryan he was still on douglas, then he switched to the middle, hey maybe that was the point, and at that moment, the pressure came and he unloaded it.

when i was watching the play, i saw the angel in angels in the outfield come on the field and throw tony g out of the play just enough so where he couldn't catch it.

I'm glad you saw him eying Douglas IRL, b/c I don't see it in the film.

I'll admit I'm partially wrong about his throw, due to the pressure he was getting. But he still could have led TG a bit more and been free of Vaccaro -- if he'd put the proper touch on the ball. To stay nothing of moving toward his right -- he definitely panicked in the pocket.

I don't know if anyone posted this or not

From ESPN power rankings: (I know, I know)

quote:

Matt Ryan was sacked three times in 15 drop-backs against at least five rushers in Week 1. Ryan wasn't sacked on 31 such drop-backs last year against New Orleans.

it's not as easy to see from this angle, but you can see his head move from one player to the other when he throws. Admittedly, the play is quicker than it felt. The pressure does force him off douglas (so I'm wrong there) however, if you watch it a few times, he is clearly targeting douglas before he moves to tony and then throws the ball

3:30 mark. It is tough to see in the replay.
