First, the Falcons should absolutely have consulted Cousins before drafting Penix. That was just plain dumb.

However, there is nothing wrong with the actual pick. There is something wrong (and was wrong at the time it happened) with the media's portrayal of Kirk Cousins as the second coming of Tom Brady. When that happened, most everyone on the press handed the division to Atlanta and pretty much declared them the Super Bowl favorites in the NFC.

Maybe the Falcons see Cousins as he is: a middle of the pack ageing NFL starter with injury issues. An improvement to be sure, but Mahomes he is not. Take away the age and the injury, he is Derek Carr. Overpaid as well but that's the QB market these days. But he is not the long term answer, and Penix was there for the taking. He can sit and learn for a few years.

It makes sense if you drop the notion of Kirk Cousins as football messiah.

Cousins is coming off a significant injury and there is not guarantee he will be a great player. Could they have told him they plan on taking a QB? Sure. "Consulted" him? No. Cousins isn't good enough to do that.

The prevailing thought is that Atlanta has some good players on their team, particularly on offense, but lacked a good QB. In getting a QB who has had at least some degree of success in the NFL the thought is that makes the other pieces much better. So I can see why many would think they could be the favorites in what is an awful division. Hell, the EXACT same thing happened last year when the Saints signed Carr. But I don't know of a single person (except maybe the straw man you have fabricated in your head) who has portrayed Cousins as the second coming of Tom Brady.

I may be wrong but I feel if you compare the last few years Cousins is the best QB in the division.

I think he is better than Carr, Mayfield, and Young.

Terrible take. This never happened. The Falcons did, however, commit a shite-ton of money to him. The media didn't make that up.

You don't take a QB at 8 overall to "sit and learn for a few years." Their biggest value is playing on their rookie deal so you can spend that money elsewhere. AND, Penix is already old for a rookie. There's just no excusing this Falcons' frick up. If they knew they were willing to take Penix at 8, there was no reason to sign Cousins.

What are you talking about? Zero people have this notion. Literally zero. Not even Kirk Cousins himself. People rightfully thought he immediately became the best QB in the NFC South, and with their other weapons probably made them the favorite to win a crap division. Could have given Cousins Odunze, Bowers, any OT not named Alt or literally ANY defensive player in the draft. The ONLY way this works out is if Cousins gets hurt, and I don't think that's a very enviable position for the organization to put themselves in.

But hey, as a Saints fan, I'm happy as hell they fricked up so bad. But there is simply no way to spin this as a good move. Somebody fricked up. I hope it comes out. There had to have been one hell of a power struggle in that draft room last night.

Why?
Cousins just got there. You don't consult him. You tell him when you are drafting the qb, just like they did.

People are going to look dumb on this when penix turns into a good nfl qb.

Their thought was they won't be that high again with Cousins at qb.

Cousins is 36. He might make all 4 yrs of the contract but he might get hurt again.

You are literally the only person that has said this…cousins is mediocre and even Atlanta knows it that why they drafted an insurance plan.

No, they should not have. Is he part owner or something now?

I think there is. Penix has terrible mechanics. And two torn ACLs in his history. He's a big reach at #8.

I assure this is pretty much how they see him. They're only locked in for 2 years.

They think Penix is the shite. (I disagree.) But also like having him groomed for 2 years under a veteran. That's their plan.

You don’t commit $180 fricking million on mediocre. If you’re going to get a mediocre FA QB, you get one for $5 to $7 million and draft a QB, not break the bank for one
