Everyone is sleeping on the saints.

The Saints have had the top offense in the NFL the past three seasons in a row.
2016
2015
2014
With how quickly teams can rise and fall in the NFL, how can you not constantly be worried about saints? We went from an 8-8 season to a 13-3. We didn't even have a top 15 defense when we won in 2009. If we manage to muster a defense that isn't in the bottom 3rd of the league, we are super bowl contenders. Not just some rinky dink wild card team, but a number 1 or 2 seed.
Brees is still playing as good as ever; I don't think you can argue otherwise with the production he has had the past 3 years. Everyone I talk to thinks the Saints are some god awful organization right now, and that Brees is near his end. We were a few extremely unlucky special teams plays from being 9-7 last year despite having a bottom 5 defense. Four of our loses were within 3 points. And of the remaining 5, only two of the losses were by more than 7 points.
If we have a below average defense this year, we're going to the playoffs, and we will be a force to be reckoned with.

We submit better than a 31st ranked performance by the defense, we'll likely finish 9-7. Hell better than 25th ranked, we might even make the playoffs. Won't guarantee but can happen.

Gotta have decent defensive play. Can't do it with just one or the other

The fact that our offense is almost guarenteed to be ATLEAST top 5, it frustrates me to see that no one understands that all we need is our defense to be AVERAGE and we will be in the playoffs. We have young guys, but more depth than ever imo. A lot of new faces as well.

That's not been the only problem. Another problem has been inconsistency by the offense when the defense did get stops, and they did a couple of times before they eventually broke.
The offense played its arse off when the defense was shite. And when the defense played its arse off the offense would stall and fail to make up ground in losses or fail to put teams away.
You saw what the Saints could become in that first Carolina game in 2016. We got stops and our offense fired on all cylinders early, which led to us curb stomping them that first quarter. Then later we saw how the Saints normally lose, through shitty defensive play and inconsistency on offense, which allowed Carolina to mount their comeback. What we need is consistency across the board, in addition to better defensive play.

If they are as committed to the run as they appear to be in this off-season than I think that automatically makes the defense better.

Defense wins championships and we haven't had one since 3G left.
Payton also has a penchant for abandoning the running game or refusing to pound the rock early. Statistically, and he admits this at the beginning or middle of every single season, we do better when we use the run to open the pass but he's always quick to forget that. It's infuriating.

Super Bowl run the Saints made a concerted effort to rush and were ranked 6th at the end of the year. Last year we were decent at like 16th. Prior to 2009 CSP was pass happy and they were not balanced.
Hoping if the line jells and the additional of All Day and AK will get us back there. As others have mentioned D is huge, even if we are middle of the pack and can create more turnovers.
Saints were close last year. So many games they lost that they should have won if the D or special teams could have made one or two more plays.
But with three years at 7-9 I don't blame anyone not watching the Saints.

We just need our defense to stop getting annihilated by injuries and we'd be alright.
I think a full season of the expected full defensive backfield even probably flips us to 9-7. People bitch about how horrible the defense was but also don't recognize who was playing. Our depth isn't good (how many teams' are?)
Keenan Lewis
Breaux
PJ Williams
Kyle Wilson
Swann

I don't have a problem with anyone sleeping on the Saints. We have been 7-9 three years in a row, why should anyone see us as a threat until we prove otherwise? Also, I like being the sleeper

I wouldn't be too proud of the perfect passing offense you've created. The ability to coach a perfect passing game is insignificant next to the power of a balanced offense and solid defense.
Search your feelings. You know this to be true.

This bickering is pointless. Now Lord Allen will provide us with the location of the hidden falcons fortress. We will then crush the NFC South with one swift stroke.

Actually, thanks to Bill Belichick's spies, I have obtained plans of the falcons fortress.
Here is the layout:
Its defenses are designed around a direct, large-scale assault. But you see that spot at the top? It's a small thermal exhaust port. The shaft leads directly to the completely empty trophy room. A precise hit will start a chain reaction which should destroy the franchise.
Many think such a hit is impossible, but just last week sports science showed Drew Brees bullseyeing womprats and they're not much bigger than 2 meters.

We actually intercepted some communications between Matt Ryan and Arthur blank regarding the devastating set back at the battle of the superbowl:
Ryan:Uh, everything's under control. Situation normal.
Blank: What happened?
Ryan: Uh, we had a slight play call malfunction, but uh... everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?

Terrible board to admit this on but...
On paper the Saints look like the worst team in the NFC South.

Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but I like the makeup of our defense right now. LB's are still a huge question mark but I see potential for at least average play there with the personnel additions, and I will absolutely take average LB play right now.
Losing Fairley is a huge blow IMO. The combo of him and Rankins looked to be nasty and offered us a little compensation for lack of an outside pass rush. But with Okafor and hopefully Pineapple if he can stay healthy, I like our ability to generate some rush opposite Jordan.
Secondary seems to be solid to me as well, which feels a little crazy to say but I really think we might have a solid lineup there.
My concern on offense is the OL. Does Strief have another year of productive play? With Armstead going down, how does the line shake out? Can Ramcyzk contribute quality play right away? Does Unger get healthy?
I have no concerns with our RB's and WR's. The trio of Ingram, Peterson, and Kamara I think will be one of the more dynamic backfields in the league.
If the Saints can avoid anymore injury attrition of key players, which history shows is unlikely, then I think they have a legitimate shot at a run. More optimistic this year than I've been over the past several seasons.
