Evaluating the Saints' Recent Player Signings

As we all know, in the past few days, the Saints have agreed to deals with defensive tackle Shaun Rogers, runningback Pierre Thomas, and kicker Garrett Hartley. I know that most fans were very happy to see the team lock in each of these players, but the question that remains is whether or not these deals were smart ones from a business standpoint based on both contract length and salary amount. What does everyone think about each individual deal? Did the Saints make smart business moves, or did they overpay in dollars, years, or both? I'm interested to hear what everyone thinks.
Rogers - 1 year, $4 million
Thomas - 4 years, $12 million
Hartley - 5 years, $10.3 million

i guess the thomas deal is good if he stays healthy, i read your link and agree for the most part about everything.
he really had no leverage after last year in terms of demanding big time $$

Rogers - very good. Could limit how much we frontload some other deals, but he's (as has been mentioned) actually worth more and the 1 year deal makes it no risk
PT - mediocre. I like him a lot, but when you have so many good players you want to keep on the team, keep the total RB salaries as low as possible. I say let PT AND Bush go, and if you have to, use both 3rds on RBs to rotate with Ivory. The next 3 years, you'd have 3 guys that can get the job done (potentially an great one in Ivory) for about $1m per season.
Hartley - hope it's not guaranteed, but if he can play like he did in the second half of last season or all of 2009, $2m a year is a good price for kicker security.
ETA: Just saw $3m guaranteed on the blog, so a $2.4m hit if he sucks this season and we cut him. That's pretty rough for a kicker.

Thanks, much appreciated. This post wasn't meant to pump it or anything, I just wanted to see what everyone thought of the Saints' signings from a business perspective; however, I do appreciate the complement.

Rogers- position of need, bit of a gamble but not for the price; if he works out it's a steal.
Thomas- is basically the ideal RB for us if/when healthy, so I would say it's good. I don't quite suggest he tanked last year, but he was feeling unhappy/disrespected after the last offer, post-Super Bowl; this gives him some respect and security, and shows him the team wants him. I think he might be more healthy now.
Hartley- well, every team needs a kicker. He's not all-pro yet, but better than what we went through before, and you know what you get with him vs scrounging up another free agent kicker. To me it's worth it just to avoid the pre-Hartley years again

This is a very good point. I still like the PT contract overall, but it will make a lot more sense if the Saints succeed in re-structuring Bush's deal.

Rogers to me is the perfect fit for need, cost, and the motivational spot for him

Kinda meh on PT, I expected him gone but the current labor situation and realizing his mkt value got him back for not an outrageous price. If he could play a full season it could be an A, like his usual 100-150 carries then a C-D.

I think the price was better than just "not outrageous"... it seemed like a great value to me, which is why I rated it so high (A-)

All true, I just really don't know if I like the 5-year length. The price is right though, and only 30% of the deal is guaranteed.
