Just getting around to reading Drew Brees' book. It was interesting how he described his interaction with the Dolphins and Nick Saban.

First off, it comfirmed my feeling of Saban being a dick.

Secondly, would Saban still be in Miami if Drew went there.

Third, would Brees had ever been successful outside of New Orleans and Sean Payton?

Funny world of circumstances and decision making we live in....

drew has an interesting way of rewriting what happened. Saban was a dick? ok, but if the dolphins offered more than the saints or at all, he'd have gone to Miami

yes, and saban did want brees despite the shoulder. He was overruled by WH who had promised saban 100% control. Watching brees tear it up and cullpepper stink it up just added insult to injury. He didn't like being overruled.

He was successful without payton outside of new orleans

it is such a turning point for both franchises and for some big names.

Miami fans, and even charger fans, are both still wondering what could have been. LSU fans too .

a monster decision in terms of both NFL and college history. Had Miami signed Brees, everything would be turned upside down and both landscapes wouldn't be recognizeable

Maybe not. Any Saban team focuses on traditional, line-of-scrimmage football.

Depends. Brees is a risk-taker, throws the ball into tight coverage and usually gets away with it. It takes a risk-taker as a coach to indulge that play-style. Taking everything we know about Saban into account, I think he would have forced the team into a run-first team, and probably would have morphed into a Baltimore-esque sort of offense if he was allowed to stay. I think long-term, yes. But I doubt you would have seen Miami make it all the way to the AFCC in '09, considering their division (Patriots).

Brees is one of the best to play the position. I have no doubt he'd excel in any system he was put in. I do doubt that his relationship with Saban would have been as good as his relationship with Payton, so by now you might be looking at Brees in an entirely different uniform than New Orleans or Miami, since who's to say a contract would have been issued or even accepted if he was simply a system quarterback.

Saban wanted Brees. Not sure how that makes him a dick.

Yes and No. I worked for Derek Dooley when at La Tech who was on Saban's staff in Miami. I asked him about this one day and yes they absolutely wanted Brees, but he was Triple Xed by doctors (which essentially means they don't expect the player to ever make a good or full comeback from the injury) and couldn't get the all clear from any for them to feel comfortable signing him.
