I'm copying my post from the big thread:

Troy Franklin 6'3" 187 lb WR--Oregon

He's tall, but obviously not a big body guy, which a lot of people think we need. But I think Wilson can be that guy to some extent. Along with our TEs, and I think, AT Perry. But Franklin is tall, which we lack in our top 2 WR. But he's fast, and more importantly, he was productive for 2 years:

'23--81 catches for 1383 yards and 14 TDs. 17.1 yards/rec

'22--61 catches for 891 yards and 9 TDs. 14.6 yards/rec

And despite his frame, doesn't miss games. Played in 14 as a freshman and 13 in both his SO. and JR. seasons. Maybe there's something with his medicals, though? Why else would he still be there

I keep referencing PFF's grades, but that's nothing to do with my trusting them more than other sites--I just pulled it up Thursday and haven't closed the tab. But they have Franklin as the BPA on their big board today, but he was ranked as their #5 WR and #29 player overall. Here's what they say about him:

quote:

Franklin, a former four-star wide receiver recruit, played in all 14 games in his true freshman season at Oregon and started every game in his sophomore and junior seasons. He is a smooth strider as a vertical receiver. He was the top explosive-play pass catcher on Oregon’s offense the past two seasons. His calling card is his ability as a vertical threat, both from the slot and the outside. Over the past two seasons, he diversified his releases and his general footwork to create separation in more ways than just through vertical speed. His play strength is a concern when fighting through the contact window and on contested catches.

I think you add him to Olave, Shaheed, Perry (who we still don't know exactly what we're getting with, but feel pretty good so far) and Wilson, and you have one of the deepest and most explosive WR groups in the NFL What would you be willing to give up for him? Assuming there's nothing going on with his medicals or off-the-field stuff. I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I'd give up next year's 3 and one of our 5ths to take him at the top of the 4th today. Turn a relative weakness (depth-wise) into a strength.

And it gives us 2 very strong position groups in WR and CB (for now, anyway). I'm ok with giving up next year's 3rd, because I think we're gonna get one back for Latt before next year's draft. Day 3 picks are crapshoots, but I think Franklin's measurable plus his multi-year production at a high level P5 school mitigates the risk. Unless there's something going on with him we don't know about. Thoughts? Or are y'all cool with just waiting till Round 5 and seeing what's left?

I’d use a 5th or a 6th on a top punter.

We saw last year how frustrating it was watching our punter (don’t even remember his name that’s how much he sucks) attempt to kick the ball.

Grab the top punter from Arizona or Iowa and don’t worry about the position for the next decade.

CBS also has Franklin as their top ranked guy left on offense. Summarize:

Tall and fast (4.41?) and can go up and get the ball. More of a weaver, not crisp in and out of his breaks (which could be a plus for him at only 21-years-old--there's room for development there). Biggest knock on him is he needs to add strength to be able to get off the line better, but does have the frame to add good weight. And is still able to to make contested catches. Surprised he's still there.

Looking at the value chart, we can use all 3 5ths to get around pick 10 of the 4th, or 170/175 to get to around pick 20

WR- Tez Walker, Cornelius Johnson

I’m not a huge Tez Walker fan for some reason. Seems inconsistent or doesn’t live up to his talent or something.

I do like Johnson as a Michael Thomas replacement. I think he made JJ McCarthy look good on some of his throws. Tall, big body with decent speed and good route running ability. Would be good running those short and intermediate routes.

Damn, we need picks. I'd hate to give up 3, even if they are 5th rounders. What does next year's 3rd get us on the chart? Top 3 today?

Any one of these falling to 150 would be nice:

Theo Johnson - TE Penn St. The measurables and workout #s were almost identical to Jimmy Graham

Cade Stover - TE OSU

Jared Wiley - TE TCU

Tanor Bortolini - G Wisconsin

Hunter Nourzad - C/G Penn St

Walter Rouse - T Oklahoma started at LT all season and did a solid job. Might be there at any of the 5th rd picks.

Mekhi Wingo -DT LSU no way he lasts to 150

Jordan Jefferson - DT LSU

Fabien Lovett - DT FSU

Javon Baker - WR UCF put up good #s when getting playing time after transferring from Alabama. 1st team All Big 12.

Brenden Rice - WR USC

Dadrion Taylor-Demerson - S Texas Tech

Mohamed Kamara - Edge Colorado St. Way undersized and doesn't fit the usual prototype for edge players the Saints look for, but tons of production.

Anything after their pick at 150 is basically lotto scratch off tickets, once you get into 5th rd comp picks and later.

He’s a good one too. Would shore up that LG position for a long time to come.

I'm not sold on the saints' strategy of RAS, but I do like it in the latter rounds. Just find guys with physical ability

For the arm length aficionados, Van Pran Granger’s arms are a full 2 inches shorter than Fuaga.

But he’s strictly an interior o-lineman, so not as big of a deal.

DA said last night that he thought “OL and WR were pretty picked over already” … which is disappointing. IMO WR is easily the biggest need on the team with Shaheed having proved nothing and Olave being a 2 at best.

Wanna upgrade our receiving game? Fix the running game bc our WRs are downfield guys. If kubiak can run the ball this season, those PAs will be deadly with our WRs

so you think that even if we had an early 4th rounder, that guy would be our #1 WR, jumping Olave, automatically?

c'mon man...

Wingo, Kamara, Jaden Hicks. Stover., I’d be happy with any of these. Really want Wingo, could give some pass rush on the inside. Lots of teams that taken DT’s already so maybe he slips some. VanPran wouldn’t be bad either to be our backup center.

Mahogany at guard

Erick all would've been a nice pick if we had a 4th.

Give me brenden rice or Riley.

Wingo or van pran. Van pran doesn't get enough love imo.

Only way I take van pran is if the saints think he can make the move to guard
